WAYLAND AUTHOR JULIETTE FAY. Wayland's own Juliette Fay will be at the library to talk about her latest book, The Shortest Way Home, on Sunday afternoon, December 2. In a recent starred review, Library Journal asserted, “Fay is one of the best authors of women’s fiction, and her novels are not to be missed.” Come discover for yourself what sets Juliette’s books apart.
BOSTON TO BARCELONA: A FAMILY AT SEA. In 2005 Wayland resident Susie Klein, her husband, and their two sons, then aged 14 and 16, sailed their 41-foot sailboat across the Atlantic, stopping in the Azores, Gibraltar, Morocco, Spain and the Balearic Islands. The 65-day voyage was the prelude to a sabbatical year living and working in France. Susie’s intent was to share her passion for adventure and the sea with her sons and bind the family closer by escaping hectic lives ashore. With seven years’ hindsight, Susie will recount the adventure and its impact on her family. Come hear Susie tell about their exciting, and sometimes harrowing, adventures at sea. Susie’s articles have been published in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, SAIL, Cruising World and The Wayland Town Crier. HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE. On Sunday, December 9, the Friends of the Library will provide refreshments in the library as part of the town center holiday celebrations. Children ages 4 and up are invited to drop in to make holiday crafts with Children's Librarian Elise Katz from 2:30-4:30pm. that afternoon in the library's Raytheon Room.
GWENDOLYN GOES HOLLYWOOD. Enjoy an afternoon program of ballet fun for budding dancers and story lovers in the family when dancers from the Dancers Workshop take center stage at the Wayland Library at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 1. Author David Ira Rottenberg will read his new picture book, Gwendolyn Goes Hollywood, while the dancers give a ballet interpretation of the story.
EMPLOYMENT WORKSHOPS WITH GARY GEKOW. Our last two employment workshops with Gary Gekow have been scheduled. There will be a workshop on “Interviewing” on December 11 and one on “Salary and Benefits Negotiation” on
December 18. Both workshops are in the library’s Raytheon Room.
CHILDREN’S POETRY WORKSHOPS. Our next monthly poetry workshops for children ages eight and up will be on Wednesday, December 12, from 7-8 p.m. Children will listen to, read, and write poetry. Led by Children’s Librarian Pam McCuen.
ARTS/WAYLAND WINTER EXHIBIT. Members of Arts/Wayland will hold their annual Winter Exhibit in December and January in the Raytheon Room. Images in various media, including photography, will be displayed. There will be an artist reception, open to the public, on the afternoon of December 16.
FOYER EXHIBIT. Suzanne McMahon discovered her love of photography in high school where she learned to develop her own black & white and color prints. After attending Tufts University and Boston College, she began taking her hobby more seriously. Suzanne is now a part-time freelance photographer and shoots concert photos for the music website Twangville.com. She also enjoys taking photos on Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod. She has won a Boston Globe photo contest
and been published in Washingtonian Magazine and the Takoma Park Gazette in Maryland. By day, Suzanne is a social worker/school adjustment counselor.
NEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP. Our Needlework/Handwork group meets on the first Wednesday of each month from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Raytheon Room. PERSONAL CLOUD COMPUTING. Wayland librarian Matt Amory will give a program on Wednesday, December 19, from 7-9 p.m. talking about personal computing “in the cloud.” Matt will also introduce the library’s new Chromebooks, which can be checked out by the public for use in the library building.
LIBRARY BOOK GROUPS FOR ADULTS. The library has two book groups. The next meeting of our evening group, led by Andy Moore, will be on Monday, December 3, at 7 p.m. We will be discussing The Ask by Sam Lipsyte. Our Noontime Book Group will meet on Friday, December 14, at noon and will be discussing The Road by Cormac McCarthy. The noontime group is facilitated by Sandy Raymond. PARENT/CHILD BOOK GROUP. We are excited about the response to our new parent-child library book group, which will have its third meeting on Monday, December 17, 2012, (7-8 p.m.). It’s a group for children in 4th and 5th grade, with a parent, discusses a different book each month. Each month, the group decides together what next month's book will be. The book we’ll be talking about this month is Popular Clone by M.E. Castle. Led by Children's Librarian Pam McCuen. For more information, call Pam at 508-358-2308.
