News and Events from Wayland Library, July 25, 2014

SUMMER HOURS.  During the summer, the library will be open on Saturdays from 10-1 and closed on Sunday. The Library will be closed August 30, August 31, and September 1 over Labor Day weekend. Our regular weekend schedule (Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 2-5) will resume after Labor Day.

NON-FICTION BOOK GROUP. The next selection for our new non-fiction book group, led by Nancy McMenemy-McColm will be “Behind the Beautiful Forevers” by Katherine Boo. We’ll be meeting on Monday, August 18, 7-9 p.m. in the Raytheon Room.

DROP-IN CRAFTS. Kids ages four and up can drop in on two more Wednesdays this summer for thematic craft programs led by librarian Elise Katz.

  • July 30, 3-5 p.m.– Robot Crafts. Make crafty robots out of recycled materials.
  • August 13, 3-5 p.m.– Exploring Color. Children will experiment with color and make beautiful crafts.
  • August 20, 3-5 p.m – Solar Prints. Make solar prints with Elise

Building Challenge: Towers and Bridges. On Wednesday, August 6, from 3-4 p.m. Youth Services Librarian Pam McCuen invites children ages five and up to challenge themselves to build the tallest possible tower or strongest bridge out of recycled materials.

ICE CREAM PARTY. On Thursday, August 14, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. children of all ages are invited to the library to make their own sundaes to celebrate all the reading they have done this summer!

TEEN PIZZA PARTY. Teens who have participated in our teen summer reading club “Spark a Reaction” are invited to a Pizza Party on Tuesday, August 12, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Come eat pizza and talk about your favorite books. There will be raffle prizes! Also, teens who join the summer reading program and write at least one original review will receive a gift card for a free yogurt from FYI in Wayland.

ZUMBA KIDS JR.  On Monday July 28, from 10:30-11 a.m., children ages 2.5 to 4 years old can join us for a rhythm and dance program led by Julia Walderzak of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio in Sudbury.

AUGUST EXHIBITS. During August the Raytheon Room will feature art by Leah Litin. The work of artist Fred MacNeill will be in the foyer.

SUMMER STORYTIMES. We are maintaining a fairly regular schedule of pre-school storytimes this summer, but we may miss some days due to staff vacations. Please check our on-line calendar to confirm the storytime, or feel free to call the Children’s Department at 508-358-2308.

The following are pictures from a Wayland Library Summer Art Workshop for Teens led by Wayland High School art teacher Janet Armentano on July 16. This workshop was funded by our “Serving Tweens and Teen” grant, an LSTA grant award by the Mass. Board of Library Commissioners.
