Wayland Reads Event Schedule

Sunday, March 1  |  Wayland High School Lecture Hall  |  3 p.m.
Sunday afternoon’s program will begin with several readings from “The Opposite of Loneliness,” some by those who knew Marina during her years living in Wayland, including Jim Lee (Happy Hollow School Principal), Allyson Mizoguchi (Wayland High School Principal), and WHS students Libby Camp and Thomas Leacu.  Moderator Beth McNamara, Marina’s high school English teacher for two years, will then solicit questions for the panel and open up the discussion on Marina, her writing, and her legacy.

SMALL BOOK DISCUSSIONS

Lunch block book discussion with  WHS students, and pizza is included!  Led by Joanne Schmidt, WHS Librarian, and Allyson Mizoguchi, WHS Principal.  Public welcome.

Book talk led by Joyce Kulhawik, Emmy Award-winning arts and entertainment criThe-Opposite-of-Loneliness-by-Marina-Keegan-NYTtic and President of the Boston Theater Critics Association.

Book talk led by Beth McNamara, Keegan’s high school English teacher at Buckingham Browne & Nichols.

Friday, March 13  |  Wayland Public Library’s Raytheon Rm.  |  12 p.m.
Wayland Public Library’s Noon Book Group, led by Sandy Raymond, Assistant Director at the Wayland Public Library.

Friday, March 20  |  Panera, Wayland Town Center |  10 a.m.  Book talk led by Wayland poet Judy Hoyer.

PANEL DISCUSSION: “LET’S MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN TO THIS WORLD”
Thursday, March 12  |  Wayland Free Public Library  |  7 p.m.

Inspirational panel moderated by Steve Grossman, former MA State Treasurer, that features local young adults making a difference.

Participants include Lauren Grimanis from Akaa Project, Patrick Higdon from World Connect/Kids Connect, Zachary Tofias from c40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, Maddy Schwartz from Wayland Water Warriors, Kate Washek of Wayland’s Neighbor Brigade, and career changer and now farmer David Rockermann (former WHS teacher).

WRITING WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS
March 9, 16, 23  |  Wayland Public Library’s Raytheon Rm.  |  7 p.m.

The Personal Essay Writing Program, led by Giulietta Nardone, will meet on three Mondays in March, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.  The program is inspired by the soul-touching words of Marina who said, “Yale is full of tiny circles we pull around ourselves.”  This program is one of those tiny circles that will invigorate and inspire participants.  You will discuss essays from “The Opposite of Loneliness” and other selections before writing your own heartfelt and insightful prose.

Wayland’s Giulietta “Julie” Nardone has offered creative writing programs to adults and teens since 2009.  Her stories and essays have been published in Chicken Soup for The Soul, The Boston Globe, The Christian Science Monitor, Skirt! Magazine, MetroWest Daily News, Let Go: The Art of Spiritual Surrender, Common Ties, Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader, Flashquake and broadcast on NPR.   Please register at waylandlibrary.org/events.

READING OF KEEGAN’S PLAY “UTILITY MONSTER,” AND TALK BACK
Thursday, March 26  |  Wayland High School Lecture Hall  |  7 p.m.

For members of the community who enjoyed “The Opposite of Loneliness,” this staged reading is an opportunity to experience more of Marina’s writing in a live performance.  WHS students in Mr Weingartner’s advanced theater class will perform the reading.

YOUTH AND CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS
Wednesday, March 11  |  Wayland Public Library  |  2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Journal-making craft for ages 9+, led by Elise Katz, Librarian, Wayland Public Library.Make a simple journal with blank pages for writing or artwork.  Or if you have your own store-bought blank journal, you can decorate your cover with paper ephemera.  We will provide materials and tools, including paper punches, rubber stamps, special papers, postcards, cutouts from magazines, postage stamps, tapes, ribbons, decorative scissors, etc.  Or bring your own paper mementos and photos!

Thursday, March 19  |  Wayland Public Library  |  2:45 p.m.

Middle school age+ writing workshop, led by Angie Corbet, retired Wayland Middle School English teacher.  Marina was always a curious and passionate writer and from an early age kept journals.  As a WMS student and high schooler she explored her ideas, hopes, and questions in words and sketches.  Join this workshop to start your exploration!
