WAYLAND POETRY WORKSHOP ANNUAL READING. The Wayland Library Poetry Workshop will be hosting an annual poetry reading Sunday, April 26, at 2:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend. The library sponsors the Poetry Workshop. Natick poet Francine Brown will read from her poetry, followed by readings from other members of the library poetry group. Poetry subjects include square dancing, nature, travel, relationships, and humor. Following the program, there will be refreshments. For more information, contact Judy Hoyer at 508-655-2868.

WHY DID CINDERELLA’S STEPSISTERS CHOP OFF THEIR FEET Hmmm? Good question! For over two hundred years the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale collections have bewitched their readers. To this day the stories continue to inspire new variations in cultures around the world. Who were the Brothers Grimm and what is the reason for the tales’ ongoing popularity? At our final Great Presenters program of the season on Tuesday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m., Professor Sabine von Mering of Brandeis University will shed some light on this fascinating subject. Dr. von Mering holds a Ph.D. in German Studies from the University of California Davis. She has been a Wayland resident since 2003.

Instructions_not_IncludedFOREIGN FILM SERIES. The library will be screening foreign films in the Raytheon Room occasionally in the upcoming months. The first movie, “Instructions Not Included,” is from Mexico and will be shown on Tuesday, April 28, 6:30-9 p.m. In this film a man who has made a new life for himself and the daughter left on his doorstep six years ago finds his family threatened when the birth mother resurfaces. 100 minutes. Spanish with English subtitles.

AUTHOR EVELYN WOLFSON. Local author Evelyn Wolfson will talk about her new book, “Legendary Locals of Wayland” in the Raytheon Room on Wednesday, May 6, at 7 p.m. The book discusses the amazing men and women who dedicated their lives and careers to developing the town of Wayland and retaining its rural atmosphere. Co-sponsored with the Wayland Historical Society.

Polar Bear Party!  On Wednesday, April 29, at 3 p.m., kids ages 4 and up can come to the library to learn about endangered polar bears. There will be books, crafts and more. A Middlesex Savings Bank Fun Club event.

RAFFLE BASKET AT FRIENDS’ BOOK & BAKE SALE  New—a raffle for a basket of book-themed goodies! Showcased at the Wayland Library and then at the Town Building during the book sale, the basket contains FIVE popular books, an LED book light, the new Friends’ tote bag, a gift certificate to use at the next sale, snacks to enjoy while reading, and much more. The winner’s name will be drawn on Sunday, May 10, at the library. Tickets are $2 each or $5 for three and may be purchased at the book sale (May 1-3 at the Town Building) and at the library. The Book Sale will be at the Town Building on Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday, May 3, from 12-4 p.m. with a preview for members of the Friends on Friday, May 1, from 6-8:30 p.m. Donations of books will be accepted during set-up in the Large Hearing Room on Wednesday, April 29, and Thursday, April 30. Donations of baked goods will be accepted from Friday until the end of the sale on Sunday. Teens can earn two hours of community service moving books for the sale on Sunday, April 26, 12 noon and also after the sale on Tuesday, April 28, at 7 p.m. No car required for either job–just a strong back! Needlework/Handwork Group. Our needlework group is a group facilitated by Ann Moses for people to work on needlework and handwork projects together. It generally meets on the first Wednesday morning of each month in the library’s Raytheon Room. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for May 6 and June 3.

LIBRARY WORKSHOPS. The library is running some workshops, described below, to help people stay apace with the techy world. Space is limited, and registration is recommended for all classes. Register by going to “Events” at waylandlibrary.org or by calling the library at 508-358-2311.

  • ipadIntroduction to the iPad, Friday, May 8, 10-11 a.m.   Baffled by your iPhone or iPad beyond calling and texting? Come on in. M.J. will discuss organizing icons, SIRI and the microphone, battery life, and other basics of these versatile and complex devices. Be sure to bring your iPhone or iPad with you.
  • How to Find Your Next Great Read, Monday, May 11, 2-3 p.m. Do you struggle to find a good book to read, often wandering bookshelves for something that grabs your attention? Or, do you read the latest bestsellers or recommendations from friends to find those disappoint you? If so, this workshop is for you. We will introduce you to online tools that will make finding your next great read easy and fun.
  • google driveGoogle Drive, Thursday, May 14, 2-3 p.m.   Want to access documents from any computer for free? Would you like to easily share documents and collaborate with your family, committee, or co-workers? For many, Google Drive has replaced the need for Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Learn about this free tool that stores documents in the Cloud, not just on your personal computer.
  • overdriveOverdrive: the Library eBook App for iPhone and iPad, Monday, May 18, 2-3 p.m. Discover how easy it is to find, reserve, and download library ebooks and eAudiobooks. You’ll also learn how to modify the print size and color, and how to create bookmarks. Bring your Apple ID and password.

ZUMBA KIDS JR. On Tuesday, April 28, at 10:30 a.m., Julia Walderzak of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio in Sudbury will be here to lead a rhythm and dance program for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old in the library’s Raytheon Room.

STRATEGIES FOR MANAGING THE WEB PRESENCE OF YOUR LOCAL BUSINESS  The Internet continues to evolve, affecting both our lives and our businesses. Local businesses are often at a disadvantage on the Internet. Hear about strategies to deal with the mobile revolution, gradual change in expectations, social networks, and how to manage and grow your business through its web presence. Learn about some of the common mistakes business owners make and how to avoid them. Presenter Gevorg Abrahamian is currently Director of Product Management at Oracle where he has spent the past 16 years helping public and private sector organizations improve their Enterprise Performance Management solutions. For the past three years, he has devoted his nights and weekends to helping local business owners improve their web presence, grow, and compete more effectively on the Internet. Tuesday, May 12, 7 p.m.

AUTHOR RON MCADOW.  Ron McAdow, former executive director of Sudbury Valley Trustees and the author of a popular local river guide, has just published a novel, “Ike.” On Wednesday, May 20, at 7 p.m. Ron will be at the library to tell us about his new book, which is set in a Massachusetts town he calls Westforest. Ron will introduce his major characters and themes and describe the process of writing a first novel while in his sixties.
