Math Power for All returns to Wayland this summer after a successful debut in 2014. The one-week program is scheduled for August 17-21, 2015, at Wayland High School. Developed and led by Dr. Christine Moynihan, the five-day offering features two sessions. Grades 2 – 5 attend from 9 am – 12 noon and Grades 4 – 8 participate from 1 pm – 4 pm. Families with questions about which level an entering Grades 4 or 5 student should take may contact Dr. Moynihan at: Moynihan.christine@gmail.com. Each section will enroll a minimum of 10 students and a maximum of 20.

Dr. Moynihan is a math consultant and author. Her most recent position was as principal of the Williams Elementary School in Newton and prior to that she was the Math & Science Specialist for the Wayland Public Schools.  She describes the goal of Math Power as being to “refine, extend, and sharpen math skills prior to returning to the classroom in the fall.” The program is offered through Wayland School Community Programs, Wayland Public Schools.

In outlining how she believes Math Power will help learners, Dr. Moynihan says it will:

  • Ignite reasoning and logical thinking
  • Help students sort and classify information
  • Teach children to think like a mathematician
  • Develop thinking skills that apply across all subject areas
  • Boost classroom performance and reduce summer regression

To achieve these goals, methods employed will include: an analysis of student levels, individual and small group work, and logical and strategic thinking taught through games and deductive reasoning activities. The fee is $325, which includes a $50 materials charge. Registration is available online here.  For programming questions, contact Dr. Moynihan at Moynihan.christine@gmail.com, and for registration information, contact 508-655-6403 or email Rosemarie_Teti@wayland.k12.ma.us.
