July 10: Into the Woods

This 2015 musical stars Meryl Streep as the Witch in this Stephen Sondheim musical mashup of fractured fairy talkes with great performances from Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Johnny Depp as the Wolf, Tracey Ullman as Jack’s mother, and James Corden as the Baker. Can the Baker reverse the curse on his family? Could Johnny Depp be hairier? Winner of the 1987 Tony Award for Best Original Score.

July 17:  West Side Story

The original 1961 masterpiece by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim with choreography by Jerome Robbins. Ten Oscars were awarded including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. The Jets and the Sharks rumble in an update of Romeo and Juliet with racism driving the tragic story. Natalie Wood, Rita Moreno, Richard Beymer, and George Chakiris star. See if you can spot Natalie wood lip-synching her songs to Marni Nixon’s voice or Richard Beymer lip-synching to Jimmy Bryant’s voice!

July 24: Grease

You’ll want to get up and dance to this 1978 musical starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing, and Jeff Conaway as 1950s Rydell High School rivals. Winner of the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Musical Motion Picture and Favorite Overall Motion Picture in 1979. Enjoy High School romance and rivalry among the T Birds, Scorpions and the Pink Ladies. Spot some real 1950s performers: Eve Arden, Joan Blondell, Sid Caesar, and Edd “Kooky” Byrnes while Frankie Avalon croons.

July 31: Twenty Feet from Stardom

Backup singers you know and love tell stories of life just behind the spotlight. You probably don’t know their names, but you certainly know their music. Tonight, you’ll hear Merry Clayton, Darlene Love, and Lisa Fischer as you’ve never heard them before. Winner of the 2013 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature Film.
