Valentine’s Day Gift Collection for Residents of Area Domestic Violence Shelter Programs

2014 Valentine BagsEach year the Sudbury-Wayland-Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable sponsors a Valentine’s Day Gift Drive to help make the day brighter for families who are not safe in their own homes. The families reside in shelters and transitional housing programs of three area domestic violence organizations: REACH Beyond Domestic Violence, The Second Step, and Voices Against Violence.

Valentine’s Day can be difficult for families living in domestic violence shelters. It is a holiday that centers around love and caring, and for families who have experienced abuse, this is a particularly sad and lonely time. Family life and relationships have not turned out as they have hoped, and being away from family and friends makes the day more difficult. The Sudbury-Wayland-Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable gives each family member a bag of age appropriate gifts. The gift bags remind the recipients that people care about them and support their decision to end abuse in their lives.

The Roundtable Outreach Committee invites individuals, faith communities, scouts, schools, and community organizations to participate in this Valentine Collection. A list of recommended donations can be found on the Roundtable website at www.domesticviolenceroundtable.org.

If you would like to participate, a basket for donations will be located at the Wayland Public Safety Building, 38 Cochituate Road, Wayland (at the intersection of Routes 20 and 27) from February 1-9.

Volunteers are welcome to join Roundtable members as they assemble the gift bags on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at 3pm in the Community Meeting Room of the Wayland Public Safety Building.
