MEET THE ARCHITECT JUNE 8 AND SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS
Tappé Architects look forward to hearing your ideas about our library’s future on Wednesday, June 8, 7 p.m. in the Large Hearing Room of the Wayland Town Building. Come learn about three potential library sites and share what matters most to you about our library. Don’t forget to go to go waylandlibrary.org and fill out the survey on library spaces to warm up for a lively discussion on June 8.

Richard Gid PowersRICHARD POWERS–THE SURREAL LIFE OF A SCIENCE FICTION ARTIST
At our last Great Presenters program for the season on Tuesday, June 7, at 7:30 p.m., Wayland resident Kathy Powers Sherry and her brother Richard will talk about the life and prolific career of their father, Richard “Gorman” Powers. He is widely regarded as the single most influential artist in the history of paperback illustrative art and was recently inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. His influential career spanned over four decades during which he produced jacket illustrations for some 1,200 science fiction novels. During June, Powers’ art will be on display in the library.

mangaManga workshop for teens
Manga Artist Kat Klockow will talk about all the steps that go into drawing comics and the cultural differences and similarities between Japanese manga and American comics. For teens in grades 6 through 12. Tuesday, May 31, from 2:45-4:15 p.m.

MAGIC SHOW
Magician Scott Jameson will kick off Wayland Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, “On Your Mark, Get Set…Read,” with a magic show for ages 3 and up! This free program is made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Library and in part by a grant from the Wayland Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Wednesday, June 22, 2-2:45 p.m.

ONGOING KIDS’ PROGRAMS

  • Storytimes!
    • Mother Goose Time (Infants-2.5 years) Most Tuesday mornings, 10:30-11 a.m.
    • StoryVine (2.5 -5 years) Most Thursday mornings from 10:30-11 a.m.
  • Zumba Kids Jr.  Tuesdays, May 31 and June 28, 10:3-11 a.m. for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old
  • Read to Corbyn the Samoyed  Tuesday, June 7, 3:30 p.m. for kids of all ages.
  • Drop-in Board Games.  Wednesday, June 8, 3-5 p.m. for ages 5 and up.  Play a favorite board game with a friend in the library. We will supply the games.
  • STEAM Team: Cantilevers.  Wednesday, June 15, 3:30-4:30 p.m. for ages 5 and up.  Who can make the longest cantilever? Children will spring into summer with this physics challenge.

  • OverDrive and Hoopla and Lynda, Oh My!   Learn how to download eBooks, audio, and more from the library Monday, June 13, 2 p.m.
  • Drop-In One-on-One Technology Assistance.  Wednesdays, June 15 and 29, 2-4 p.m

tumbling turner sistersTUMBLING TURNER SISTERS!  Join us for our first community-wide summer read! We’ve selected Wayland resident Juliette Fay’s new book, “The Tumbling Turner Sisters,” historical fiction about a family performing vaudeville. The book is so new that we kick off our program Thursday, June 9, 7 p.m. at the author’s book launch at Sandy Burr Country Club where the Juliette will formally present the book and get us excited to read it. On Sunday, September 18, at 3 p.m. the author will join us in the library for a casual book discussion. So read the book and be prepared to come with your thoughts and questions in the fall. Extra copies will be available in the library to take on your summer adventures.

COMMUNICATE BETTER Learn some energy self-management techniques and how they can help you communicate and lead from a place of personal power. Presenter Rachel Rice is the founder and CEO of Five Rhythms Consulting and has spent the majority of her career in corporate leadership roles, most recently as CMO for New York Life Retirement Plan Services, overseeing marketing, product development, web strategy, and creative execution. Rachel helps clients integrate mind/body practices into their business routine and leadership style to drive the best possible outcomes for themselves and their organizations. Monday, June 13, 7-8 p.m.

PIZZA/STUDY NIGHTS FOR WHS STUDENTS.  During Wayland High School finals week, the library will be open late until 11 p.m. on the evenings of June 14-16 (Tuesday-Thursday) for high school students who want to study for exams. We will serve pizza a little after 5 p.m. on those evenings to teens who are here during the dinner hour and will also provide some snacks throughout the evening.

The library runs several adult book groups, and new members are always welcome. For more information about any of the groups, call the library at 508-358-2311.

FOREIGN FILM SERIES–VALENTIN
Argentinian filmmaker Alejandro Agresti turns his lens to his own childhood in this nostalgic coming-of-age tale set in the director’s hometown of Buenos Aires, circa 1964. Screening will be Tuesday, June 21, from 6:30-9 p.m.
