News and Events from the Wayland Library, June 23, 2016

HOLIDAY WEEKEND.  The library will be closed for the Independence Day weekend from Saturday, July 2, through Monday, July 4. Summer hours will start the following weekend. During the summer we are open 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday and closed on Sundays.

on your mark get set readSUMMER READING PROGRAM.  On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!, the library’s 2016 Summer Reading Program for children from PreK to Grade 6 started on June 20. Kids can register for the program in person in the children’s room or via our website. They can keep track of their reading online or on paper logs (available in the Children’s Room). Check out the grade-level book lists on our website compiled by Wayland Library staff. We have a lot of great kids’ programs planned for the summer, too, including a Quidditch match (6/30), drop-in crafts (7/6), puppet shows (7/7 & 7/18), a visit from Firefighter Todd (7/12), Creative Movement (7/20), a Library Olympics (7/21), a Hula Hoops with Boston Hoops (7/26), and theater workshops in late July, Cooking for Kids (8/1), Science Workshop on balance and motion and Newton’s laws (8/8), Make your own Olympic Medal (8/11). BIG LIBRARY READ FROM OVERDRIVE.  From June 23 through July 7 OverDrive is offering unlimited e-book downloads of Julie McElwain’s “A Murder in Time.” No wait list…could be a good summer book group choice!

ONGOING KIDS’ PROGRAMS

  • Storytimes!  
    • Mother Goose Time (Infants-2.5 years) Most Tuesday mornings, 10:30-11 a.m.
    • StoryVine (2.5 -5 years) Most Thursday mornings from 10:30-11 a.m.
  • Zumba Kids Jr.  Tuesday, June 28, 10:3-11 a.m. for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old
  • Spanish Storytime.  Wednesday, June 29, 10:30-11 a.m. for ages babies to 5 years old.  Children and their caregivers are invited to join us for stories, songs and fingerplays in Spanish.

STORYTIME WITH A DOG.  Children will listen to dog stories and have a special canine visitor! Corbyn, a beautiful Samoyed, and her owner Helen will join us for Storytime on Thursday, July 28, at 10:30 a.m. Ages 3 and up

ManuFact_poster.inddFILM SCREENING: MANUFACTURED LANDSCAPES.  Manufactured Landscapes” is a feature-length documentary on the world and work of renowned artist Edward, who makes large-scale photographs of ‘manufactured landscapes’ – quarries, recycling yards, factories, mines, dams. He photographs civilization’s materials and debris, but in a way people describe as “stunning” or “beautiful” and so raises all kinds of questions about ethics and aesthetics without trying to easily answer them. The Armchair Travel Book Club presents this film after have read the book “Visit Sunny Chernobyl” by Andrew Blackwell in March in which the author referenced Burtynsky and this film. All are welcome. Wednesday, July 13, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Raytheon Room.

CLEAN EATING BOOK CLUB.  Explore clean eating approaches potluck style! Participants make a recipe from a selected cookbook to share. While enjoying our homemade delights, we’ll discuss the book, its author, and what each has to offer. tumbling turner sistersWAYLAND SUMMER READ.  Join us for our first Wayland Summer Read! Wherever you head this summer, consider taking Juliette Fay’s new book, “The Tumbling Turner Sisters” with you. Juliette is a resident of Wayland and author of several popular books. This is her first foray into historical fiction, telling the story of a family in vaudeville. We hope you’ll read the book and attend the events related to the book this summer and fall.
