Wayland School Community Programs’ Summer Programs at Wayland High School

From a summer strings program to journalism and computer science programs, Wayland Public School students have several summertime options to delve into an area of interest.

Complete information and registration forms are available online here.

Here are brief descriptions of the four programs:

Game Designing with Processing (June 26 – 30)

This is a free, five-day class being taught by volunteer Andy Wang, a high school junior.  It’s for students entering Grades 6 – 8, who would enjoy an introductory programming course.  By week’s end, you’ll be able to create personal programs such as a game or a practical application. Time is from 10 am – 2 pm.

Computer Programming with Eli Bucher (June 27 – August 4)

This class for entering Grades 9 through 12 at WHS costs $85. It’s on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 12:30 –2:30 pm (17 classes) and has proven to be good preparation for Advanced Placement Computer Science, according to Bucher. The curriculum will help students deepen their interest in computer science and develop greater skill in solving complex problems.  It will also focus on graphics and game development.

Wayland Summer Strings (July 24-28)

Wayland Summer Strings is in its fourth year. It’s a one-week chamber music program from 12:30 – 3:30 pm and most of the participants are entering Grades 6 – 9 although a few are entering Grade 5. It’s led by Whitney Tandon, the district’s Grades 4 – 8 strings director. Musicians rehearse together daily, enjoy fun musical activities, and come together on Friday for an ensemble performance highlighting the week’s accomplishments.  Only a few spots are open for this $150 program.

Summer Journalism Camp  (July 24-28)

This is also a free class for students entering Grades 7, 8, & 9. No experience is needed for this 9 – 11:30 am class being led by volunteer Nathan Zhao, a Wayland High School junior with interests in journalism, creative writing, and public speaking.  He is involved in student journalism at the high school and wants to
help middle school students prepare for the journalism opportunities awaiting them at Wayland High School, such as the award-winning online newspaper, Wayland Student Press Network.
