WAYLAND SHARES: A NEW LIBRARY SERVICE

Wayland Shares is a way for patrons of the Wayland Library to express their own thoughts about library-related materials and events to each other via social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. To see our WAYLAND SHARES videos, check them out here: https://www.facebook.com/pg/WaylandLibrary/videos/ or https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv_GF1zAfu-DmSJUNk2oZLg.  This new feature allows the public to contribute reviews about library events, books, movies and much more through social media. Have some opinions about a CD you just enjoyed from the library? Did you hear an interesting speaker? Notice a cool library display, or take in a great museum exhibit that you visited with a library pass? Share your thoughts with us!

Here’s how:

  • Create a short, simple video where you talk to the camera. 30-90 seconds is best. Cell phone videos are great. Nothing fancy—just talk and share! What did you like about it? Would you recommend it to others?
  • Send the video to us via our Facebook or Instagram Messages: https://www.facebook.com/WaylandLibrary or @wayland_library.  Once your video is approved by our staff and a photo/video release form is signed, we’ll post it online! If you would like to come into the library and have a staff member film for you, please message us to schedule a mutually agreeable time.  We look forward to receiving your submissions.

Adult Programs and Workshops:

  • Library CrawlTuesday, August 1, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you are a “library person,” this self-guided tour is a fun way to visit multiple libraries in one day. The crawl will bring you to twelve different area libraries. Challenge yourself to visit as many as you can and take a picture of a designated feature at each stop. “Collect” photos from five libraries, and receive a prize at your final destination.  This is a unique way to while away a summer Tuesday!  Pick up a list of libraries and what to find in them on the day of the event.
  • Cemetery Markers: a D.A.R .Program,  Tuesday, August 1, 12:00 p.m., Wayland resident Kathleen Bernstein, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, offers an overview on the places where D.A.R. insignia cemetery markers can be found, and the process for installing new ones.
  • 3 D Printing Class,  Wednesday, August 16, 5:00 p.m. Participants will be using Fusion 360 to design their own decorative vase or pen cup.  Fusion 360 is an intermediate-to-advanced level design software.  Some familiarity with design software or at least proficiency with mouse and keyboard is advised.  All 3D prints will be free.  To register on your own you must be 12 or older. Parents of younger kids are welcome to register and are encouraged to design with their children.

Public Libraries: a Great Return on Investment.  In 2007, the Library Research Service at the Colorado State Library did a study of the economic impact of eight public libraries in the state. It found that every dollar spent on libraries yielded a return of at least four dollars in value. Some of the metrics used to calculate that value were: the cost to secure those same services from another venue (e.g. bookstore, video store); the purchase by libraries of goods and services from local businesses; and “halo” spendingwhat a consumer spends on neighboring businesses when he or she sets out to simply make a trip to the library. Go to https://www.lrs.org/documents/closer_look/roi.pdf to see the full story of how public libraries are a terrific value in sense and cents.
