WAYLAND SHARES: A NEW LIBRARY SERVICE

This new feature allows the public to contribute reviews about library events, books, movies and much more through social media.  Have some opinions about a CD you just enjoyed from the library?  Did you hear an interesting speaker?  Notice a cool library display, or take in a great museum exhibit that you visited with a library pass?  Share your thoughts with us!

Here’s how:

1. Create a short, simple video where you talk to the camera. 30-90 seconds is best. Cell phone videos are great. Nothing fancy—just talk and share! What did you like about it? Would you recommend it to others?
2. Send the video to us via our Facebook or Instagram Messages: https://www.facebook.com/WaylandLibrary or @wayland_library.
3. Once your video is approved by our staff and a photo/video release form is signed, we’ll post it online! If you would like to come into the library and have a staff member film for you, please message us to schedule a mutually agreeable time.

New!  GO Pass from The Trustees of Reservations

We invite you to visit some of Massachusetts’ most historic estates, wild landscapes, and pristine beaches with The Trustees of Reservations’ new GO Pass (G-O for “Get Outside!”).   Generously sponsored by The Friends of Wayland Public Library, this pass offers our patrons free or reduced admission to all Trustee properties, including Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, the Old Manse in Concord, and Crane Beach in Ipswich.

ADULT PROGRAMS

English Conversation Group, Friday, September 8, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Do you know someone who is learning basic English? This group is ideal for people who want to practice their English and learn about American culture. The Library’s English conversation group meets two Fridays each month from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Noon Book Group, Friday, September 8.  Edith Wharton’s novel The Buccaneers will be the topic of discussion.  No registration necessary.

The Kennedys: Part 1 of a 4-Part Series, Monday, September 11, 7pm. This year marks the centennial anniversary of the birth of John F. Kennedy.  Join us as we discuss the life, politics and legacy of JFK with history professor Gary Hylander.  Was it really Camelot?  Prof. Hylander earned his Ph.D. in American History and Government at Boston College.  He is a professor of History at Framingham State University as well as a program supervisor of student teachers at Boston University.

• Zumba Kids Jr., Tuesday, August 29, 10:30-11:00 a.m.. Rhythm and dance program for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old. Led by Hayley Chizinsky of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio.
• Brain Building Storytime,  Wednesday, September 27, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Storytime, parachute play, and brain building activity. Program led by Beverly Mobilia of Wayland Community Partnerships for Children and Families. For ages 2 to 5, with parent/caregiver.
• Storytime with Corbyn, Thursday, September 28, 10:30 a.m Children will listen to dog stories and have a special canine visitor! Corbyn, a beautiful Samoyed, and her owner Helen will join us. For ages 3 and up.

SCHOOL AGE PROGRAMS 

• Lego Club, Wednesday, September 6, 3:00pm-4:00 pm. Children will make creations out of Legos and share them with members of the club. This month’s theme: bridges. For ages 5 and up.
• Drop-In Family Game Day, Wednesday, September 13, 3:00-4:30 p.m. De-stress from the back-to-school rush and come to the library to play games! Spend quality time with your child(ren) and their friends. We will have board games, card games, and other activities to do with your children. For ages 4 and up, with parent/caregiver.
• Pop-Up Makerspace,  Wednesday, September 20, 3:00-4:30 p.m. Put on your Maker’s Hat and join our new Assistant Children’s Librarian Carly Moniz in our Pop-Up Makerspace.  Carly will have several projects and activities set up for kids who like to make stuff. For ages 5 and up.  
• Steam Team: What Makes Planes Fly?  Wednesday, September 27, 3:00-4:00 p.m. Children will learn about lift and the Bernouilli effect through simple hands-on activities, including making parachutes and paper airplanes. Challenge: try to make the paper airplane that flies the furthest! For ages 5 and up.

FOR TEENS:  Girls Who Code. The Wayland Library will hosting a Girls Who Code club again this year. The club will meet Tuesdays, from 4 to 6 p.m., starting on October 17, and will run throughout the academic year. The mission of GWC is to help bridge the gender gap in the technology fields.  Girls will learn Sratch, JavaScript, AppInventor, Python, HTML/CSS and more, to build graphics, videogames and websites.  The club will be run by Wayland parent and teacher volunteers.  For girls in grades 6 to 12.  Please register online from the Wayland Library’s eventkeeper calendar. Parents/Teachers – If you basic computer programming skills and would like to volunteer to help facilitate this club, please contact Youth Services librarian Pam McCuen at pmccuen@minlib.net. We have room for another volunteer or two.
