9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Sudbury Valley Trustees (SVT) is hosting a buckthorn pull and educational walk on Saturday, October 21 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. We need volunteers’ help to manually pull this invasive species at Memorial Forest, a beautiful and ecologically significant property. Afterwards, SVT staff will lead a 45-minute walking tour. Please wear long pants and bring water, sunscreen, and working gloves (if you have them).

Glossy buckthorn was introduced to North America as an ornamental plant, but its aggressive growth has created problems in many areas. Buckthorn produces its leaves earlier in the spring and retains them late into the fall, casting a dense shade that may prevent tree seedlings from establishing. Over time, buckthorn can completely eliminate native plant diversity in the understory.

Memorial Forest is part of the Desert Natural Area, a biologically rich area which SVT and its partners have been working to restore over the past two decades. This restoration has focused on the pitch pine-scrub oak barrens habitat, which is globally rare and provides home for declining species such as the whip-poor-will bird.

Learn how to register at SVT’s online calendar at www.svtweb.org/calendar. SVT and nearly 3000 members protect and care for land and wildlife habitat in 36 communities surrounding the Concord, Assabet, and Sudbury Rivers.
