Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music Spring Concert on May 5th

Band Director Diane Muffitt conducts a recent performance of the Sudbury Valley New Horizons Band.

Spring has finally arrived!!! Come celebrate with Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music at its 2018 Spring Concert on Saturday, May 5th, at 3 p.m. The auditorium at the Wayland Middle School (201 Main Street, Wayland) will be the site of the concert, which will showcase the work of musicians of varying ages and levels of experience. The concert will begin with 3 selections performed by the swing band, including Weather Report’s “Birdland”. The string orchestra will play several pieces, including themes from Tschaikowsky’s “Symphony No. 6 in b minor”, Mozart’s popular “Eine Klein Nachtmusik”, and George Gershwin’s signature composition, “Rhapsody in Blue”.
Among other pieces, the woodwind choir (joined by several additional members of our concert band) will offer Grieg’s familiar “In the Hall of the Mountain King”. Finally, the concert band will perform a variety of numbers, including “The Phantom Regiment” by Leroy Anderson (best known for his “Syncopated Clock)” and arranged by our own Linda Murdock, the high-energy “The Great Locomotive Chase” that brings to life the sounds and excitement of a Civil War train chase, and a medley from the Rogers and Hammerstein musical, “The King and I”.

Come get to know us during our “meet and greet” immediately after the concert, where a variety of refreshments will be served. There is no charge for attending the concert, although donations are gratefully accepted–we are a 501(c)(3) arts organization, so donations are tax deductible. You will even be able to “buy a kiss” (candy, that is!) for your favorite musicians!

In addition to its two major concerts during the year, SVNHM’s ensembles perform in other venues, including the Wayland Council on Aging Summer Community Concert Series on July 5th, and at various senior living facilities in the area. Most recently, the band performed at Heritage Assisted Living in Framingham. As part of the summer sessions, the band and the string ensemble will each perform at various senior living communities.

Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music is always looking for new members – especially for our beginner classes in the fall. Whether you are well-versed at playing an instrument, have never played and don’t even know how to read those little black marks on the paper, or are somewhere in between, our string ensemble or band is for you. Our credos are: “Your Best is Good Enough!” and “It is never too late!”. For more information, e-mail Diane Muffitt at muffitt@svnhm.org, call her at 978-261-5065, go to www.svnhb.org, or just show up for the concert. We look forward to meeting you!!!!!
