Wayland Town Crier 1/19/10: Local volunteers struggle to get to Haiti. Cramming their checked luggage allotment exclusively with much-needed medical supplies for Haiti, a 10-member aid team for Wayland-based Bread of Compassion is waiting to see whether they will actually get off the ground. The earthquake shattered the control tower for the island nation's main runway a week ago. While American military officers now in charge say capacity has been expanded, flights from other countries and relief groups have been rerouted to neighboring Dominican Republic. And though American Airlines said yesterday it has permission to reopen commercial flights to the devastated capital yesterday, for Bread of Compassion volunteers and the day's other confirmed passengers, that date has been pushed back several times. "It's up in the air," said organization founder and team leader Joe Sapienza, the pastor of Celebration International Church in Wayland. "We'll be on standby."
