Final games of 2011 USA Junior Curling National Championships are today

Fairbanks Daily News-Miner 2/5/11: Final games of 2011 USA Junior Curling National Championships are today. In the boys’ matchups, the No. 1-seeded Alex Leichter rink from Wayland, Mass., faced Minnesota’s Wald team. After putting up three points in the fourth end, Wald was ahead 3-1, but by the eighth, Leichter had pulled within one, 6-5. Wald posted a point in the ninth to lead by two, but Leichter and company weren’t ready to be finished. They put up two points in the 10th end, sending the game into an extra end. Wald picked up the 9-7 win after scoring two in the extra end, advancing to the championship match and sending Leichter to fight for a bid in the semifinals.

Wayland curlers #1 seed in Men’s USA Curling Junior National Championships

Fairbanks Daily News-Miner 2/4/11: Wisconsin curlers advance to page round in USA Curling Junior National Championships. In today’s page round, the No. 1 team plays the No. 2 team, with the winner advancing to the championship at noon Saturday. The loser moves into the semifinals, where it will play the winner of the match between the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds from the round-robin event. The winner of that match will also head to the championship round. In the men’s page round, No. 1 Alex Leichter rink of Wayland, Mass, will play No. 2 Aaron Wald rink of Chisholm, Minn., while the No. 3 Stephen Dropkin rink of Southborough, Mass., goes up against the No. 4 Landsteiner rink. The page round is at 2pm today and the semifinals are at 7pm. The championship games are at noon Saturday.

Curling Junior National Championships down to wire as finals loom

Fairbanks Daily News-Miner 2/3/11: Curling Junior National Championships down to wire as finals loom. Things are going to go right down to the wire before the finalists for the USA Curling Junior National Championships are figured out at the Fairbanks Curling Club. Six men’s teams and seven women’s teams still have mathematical chances to reach at least a tie-breaker game before the Friday’s finalists are determined. Men’s rinks skipped by Tom Gabower of Janesville, Wis., Alex Leichter of Wayland, Mass., and John Landsteiner of Trempealeau, Wis., are in control of their own destiny going into today’s final round with 6-2 records. A win in their noon matchups would mean a trip to the championship portion of the tournament.
