Wayland override would pay for new fields, updated technology at schools

Boston Globe 3/6/11: Wayland override would pay for new fields, updated technology at schools. Wayland residents will be asked to borrow $880,000 this year to build new grass playing fields and update technology in the schools, but the projects won’t increase their tax bills. Town officials said that property tax bills taxes will go down by an average of $20 even if the borrowing request is approved. The Board of Selectmen voted Monday night to approve placing a debt-exclusion override question on this spring’s ballot. The question asks residents to support borrowing $880,000 over an eight-year period to pay for two all-purpose athletic fields at the middle school, a feasibility study for playing fields at other recreational sites in town, and technology in the schools including laptops and servers, said Town Administrator Fred Turkington.

Debt Exclusion Question Will Be on Town Election Ballot

Wayland Patch 3/2/11: Debt Exclusion Question Will Be on Town Election Ballot. The Board of Selectmen Monday night voted to place a debt exclusion question on the ballot for the April 5 town election. If the ballot question passes by 50 percent at the town election, it will provide approval for the town to borrow the funds. The specific debt exclusion items will then be considered at the Annual Town Meeting as part of the larger capital budget approval, which must pass with a two-thirds vote. During a brief presentation to the selectmen Monday night, Finance Committee Chair Cherry Karlson explained that total capital requests of more than $9 million were submitted to FinCom last October. In its budget, FinCom funded $4.8 million of those requests and is asking for $880,000 of that amount to be funded through debt exclusion.

Voters to decide on new bath house at Town Beach

Wayland Town Crier 4/15/10: Voters to decide on new bath house at Town Beach. The Town Beach’s bath house on Lake Cochituate may get a complete facelift if voters approve the reconstruction of the building at Town Meeting and at the polls next month. “The building is literally rotting,” said Recreation Director Nancy McShea of the nearly 40-year-old structure. The building often floods, an annual occurrence that was intensified by this year’s heavy rains. In the spring, all equipment must be kept three feet off the ground to prevent water damage. The town has been working to replace the bath house for at least six years. The new incarnation would include improvements to the lifeguard office and restrooms. In addition to a new snack bar, there will also be a “splash bath,” a water-based playground for young children. The septic system would also receive an upgrade and the building will be altered to address Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) complaints that have plagued the old building for years.
