Most local communities fared better than the state average. Framingham's October unemployment rate was 6.5 percent, up from 4.1 percent the previous year. Ashland's October figure was 7.2; Franklin, 7.2; Holliston, 6.6; Hopkinton, 6.0; Hudson, 7.8; Marlborough, 6.7; Milford, 7.6; Natick, 6.1; Southborough, 6.8; and Wayland, 6.3. Massachusetts' unemployment rate was 9.4 percent last month, up from 6.4 percent in December 2008.
