Fine arts requirement added for incoming freshmen

Wayland Student Press Network 3/9/11: Fine arts requirement added for incoming freshmenk. In addition to other academic and physical education requirements, the incoming freshman class will have one more graduation requirement: four fine arts credits. "This is something that has been in the works for a few years now," said Fine Arts Director Susan Memoli. When Memoli took over the position three years ago, the requirement was one of the initial changes she wanted to institute. Memoli explained that since there will be more students in arts courses next year, they will offer some new courses. New courses include Classic Guitar, which, according to Memoli, "would be something that would cover kids who might be interested but don’t want to have a performance based course." "The reason behind having a fine arts graduation requirement is that most of our peer schools have one," Memoli explained. "That also falls in line with most universities; when you go, having some exposure in those areas may not be required but is appreciated."

Condoms Will Be Made Available to WHS Students

Wayland Patch 2/1/11: Condoms Will Be Made Available to WHS Students. The Wayland School Committee Monday night became the second town committee or board to unanimously approve a proposal to make condoms available to students at Wayland High School. Wayland’s Board of Health had already approved the proposal, and School Committee members were unhesitant to voice their consensus. According to the proposal, condoms will be made available through the school nurse or guidance office, and students will be required to attend a brief "educational/information session with a nursing staff member or guidance counselor" the first time they request a condom.

Wayland High School Project Designed by HMFH Architects Starts Construction

Boston/SF.com 10/28/10: Wayland High School Project Designed by HMFH Architects Starts Construction. HMFH Architects, a leading architectural firm focused on the design of innovative learning environments, announced that construction has commenced on the new Wayland High School in Wayland, Massachusetts. Slated for completion for the 2012 school year, the $56.2 million project includes 160,000 SF of new construction and 40,000 SF of renovation. KVAssociates is the Owner’s Project Manager and Shawmut Design and Construction is the Construction Manager at Risk (CM-at-Risk) under Massachusetts’s new construction statute. The original Wayland High School was designed and built in the early 1960’s and widely touted for its modern form – a modular, team-teaching, California-style campus of eight buildings. Thirty years after it opened, selected upgrades such as roof replacement, system repairs and new finishes were made to the facility, but the physical condition and the energy performance of the school continued to deteriorate. “This long-awaited project will ensure that the Town of Wayland continues its tradition of excellence in delivering quality education,” said Gary Burton, superintendent of the Wayland Public Schools. “Our Building Committee has been working closely with HMFH Architects since 2004 to define the best ways to modernize our physical facilities so that our already successful school can continue to thrive and excel. We are confident that this construction process will result in a superior new high school.”
