Wayland selectmen call out NStar over storm communication

Wayland Town Crier 9/8/2011: Wayland selectmen call out NStar over storm communication. Town officials at Tuesday night's selectmen's meeting slammed NStar over the utility's handling of communication after Tropical Storm Irene wiped out power throughout town last week. "We were putting out everything NStar gave us," Police Chief Robert Irving said, "but we didn't get all the information." Many residents felt they were being strung along by the company when they asked about getting their electricity back, Town Administrator Fred Turkington said. "The fact is, western Massachusetts was getting more help because they needed it more," Turkington said. If NStar had simply told residents that, they "might not have liked it, but they would have understood." Overall, just five trees caused a third of the town to go dark, with one fallen tree affecting 800 customers, said Turkington and Fire Chief Robert Loomer. The Department of Public Works had to wait for NStar's permission to clear trees, and many residents were without power for almost a week.
