Kevin and Tracy Keegan have watched with bittersweet feelings as their daughter’s musical, “The Independents,” has played to sold-out audiences at this year’s New York International Fringe Festival. The joy they feel in seeing their daughter, Marina Keegan’s, hard work, vision and story come to life on a stage she dreamed of, is intermingled with the sadness they feel knowing that Marina cannot be there to witness the culmination of so much hope and effort.

Marina Keegan’s ‘Independents’ at the Fringe

‘Independents’ at the Fringe. IN late May, a week after she graduated from Yale University, 22-year-old Marina Keegan headed to her family’s summer cottage on Cape Cod to begin revisions of “Independents,” a musical whose book she had written the summer before. The plan was for her to be joined there by the show’s director, lyricist and composer, but she never made it; the car in which she was riding crashed, killing her. Last weekend, “Independents” opened at the New York International Fringe Festival with Ms. Keegan’s parents, other family members and many of her friends from Yale in attendance.

Keegan’s life honored at memorial service

Yale Daily News 6/4/12: Keegan's life honored at memorial service. When the First Parish church in Wayland filled to its capacity of 400 on Saturday afternoon, over one hundred family members and friends braved the pouring rain to stand by a row of open windows and listen to the memorial service of Marina Keegan ’12. Family and friends travelled from as far as Wyoming and Minnesota to pay respects to Keegan, who died May 27 in a car accident near Dennis, Mass. Several of Keegan’s close friends spoke during the service, with most telling anecdotes about her writing, acting and influence on their own lives, and others performing songs in tribute. Keegan’s father, Kevin Keegan, thanked attendees and said the outpouring of support from people around the country has helped his family cope with its loss.
