Boston Globe 11/29/09: Regional plan for emergency care system. Thirteen cities and towns in Middlesex County have relied on an SUV from Emerson Hospital in Concord to provide paramedics and advanced life support during major medical emergencies since 1982. But that’s about to change. The hospital is phasing out its paramedic program by next fall and helping 10 of the communities to develop a new regional approach that would use two or three advance life support crews positioned strategically through the region. The communities in the new region are Acton, Boxborough, Carlisle, Concord, Lincoln, Littleton, Maynard, Stow, Sudbury, and Weston. The other communities, Bedford, Westford, and Wayland, are not part of the regional program and are finding other ways to obtain paramedic services.

Wayland Town Crier 11/27/09: Paying tribute to a 'giant' man with special concert. Although not a man of imposing physical stature, the late Allen Barker of Wayland had many qualities often associated with the word "giant." He was a talented artist and innovator, a musician, a raconteur, a bon vivant and a devoted volunteer. Besides teaching the piano to generations of Wayland children – some of whom have pursued careers on the international concert stage – Barker’s legacy lives on in town with the Little Theatre Concerts, which he founded in 1965 and, in the words of Charlie Anderson who now heads up the series, "ran pretty much single-handedly for the next 42 years."

Wayland Town Crier 11/26/09: 'Wayland A-Z': 'R' is for 'Railroads'. The sound of a train whistle through Wayland Center has not been heard since 1980. The track on the right of way under the electric towers is still there next to the Wayland Library’s parking lot. The Depot itself, now transformed into a gift shop, suggests the importance that trains once had as transportation for people and goods coming and going.

Wayland Town Crier 11/24/09: Investigating transportation options for seniors. With the holiday season hard upon us, thoughts turn to the packed schedule of events between now and the end of the year – shopping for gifts and food, refurbishing and redecorating for holiday visitors, getting out to parties, and all the other myriad chores and errands that pop up along the way. For those of us who still drive, this presents only minor challenges. But for many others who aren’t comfortable behind the wheel anymore, a certain amount of panic may set in. Fortunately, the Wayland Council on Aging offers a number of transportation options and, by making a few judicious choices and scheduling a bit in advance, residents who no longer drive can likely finish all their errands, make their medical appointments, and get to a few social events in the meantime.

Boston Globe 11/24/09: Senior softballers from Bay State play at diplomacy in Cuba. They burst into the hush of the four-star Hotel Telegrafo like old friends into a neighborhood pub, wearing baseball pants and slapping one another on the back. Shoving together white-linened tables, they beckoned waiters to bring cans of cold beer and seafood salads. The group of aging amateur softball players – half of them Cuban residents, half visitors from Massachusetts – had met just a few hours before, standing nervously along the base lines of a children’s baseball field flanked by palm trees while a band played “El Himno de Bayamo’’ and “The Star Spangled Banner.’’ Separated by language and culture and a half-century political divide, at first they had hardly known what to make of one another.
