Beginning this month, the Wayland Public Schools will begin a principal search to find a replacement for John Kavaleski, principal of Wayland Middle School. The district will use the same successful search procedure that has been used for other principal searches and administrative vacancies dating back to 1994 to advertise, screen and hire a new Middle School principal.
In addition to seeking information from focus groups, the district is calling for a limited number of volunteers to serve on one of the interview committees. For a complete description of the interview process, click here and review Superintendent Gary Burton’s letter to parents. Community members wishing to serve should download and complete the application form, and return it to Assistant Superintendent Brad Crozier . Residents who are chosen for the interview committee will be required to attend an interview training session on February 24 from 9-10am, and finalist candidate interviews on March 2 and/or March 4 (9am-3pm, tentatively).

Boston Globe 12/23/09: Bringing the recipe search up to speed. If you’re like most people, you probably make the same recipes every week because you’re too busy to skim through your cookbooks for ideas. That scenario is what inspired the authors of a new website, Eat Your Books (www.eatyourbooks.com), an online subscription service that allows you to search the indexes of hundreds of popular cookbooks. Those books may be volumes you already own, where you’ll find new recipes and revisit old favorites. The idea is that you list the books you have on the site so when you do a search, you’re looking through your own library.

On Tuesday, December 22nd, the Wayland Police Department conducted alcohol compliance checks of local businesses that have a license to sell liquor. Two youths, a nineteen year old and an eighteen year old, were sent into the establishments with instructions to attempt to purchase alcohol without showing any identification.
All liquor licensees refused to sell alcohol to these two youths. This is the first time in several years that the town had a one hundred percent success rate during a compliance check for all of the establishments in town with a liquor license.
The Wayland Police Department regularly conducts compliance checks at local businesses in an effort to reduce the underage consumption of alcohol or tobacco products.

Wayland Town Crier 12/18/09: 'Wayland A-Z': 'R' is for 'Recreation'. The American passion for organized outdoor competitive sports has been visible in Wayland for nearly a century and a half. The Live Oak Baseball Club, formed in Cochituate in 1867, first played the Natick Eagles at City Pastures, which was located south of Commonwealth Road (Route 30), just west of the intersection of Main Street and Commonwealth Road (routes 27 and 30). Home teams played at City Pastures for 16 years before moving to the "New Baseball Ground," a field behind the Lyon’s Shoe Factory on Main Street (now Griffin Ball field). Games continued there between the Wayland Meadow Hens and Cochituate Shop Ends, the lasters at Bent’s factory and the lasters at Bryant’s factory, and between the boarding houses of the Lovejoys and American House. Boston Globe 12/17/09: A new genre, Jewish rock, touches down in Boston, Brookline, and Wayland. Click the play button on the website, and at first the concert videos look like any rock show. The bass drum pounds out a backbeat. Colored spotlights rake a crowd of cheering, swaying teens. And Rick Recht looks every bit the rock star, with his long hair and worn jeans, as he steps to the microphone. But here’s the twist. He starts crooning a Jewish hymn such as “L’cha Dodi,’’ and hundreds of young voices sing the Hebrew lines back at him – along with a few random squeals. Such is the look and sound of a new genre, Jewish rock music. Rick Recht performs his “Shabbat Alive!’’ concerts on Saturday at 6pm at Temple Shir Tikva, 141 Boston Post Road, Wayland, $10 ($36 per family maximum), 508-358-9992, www.shirtikva.org.

Wayland Student Press Network 12/11/09: High school undergoes k-9 assisted drug search. After 2nd block on Friday, Principal Patrick Tutwiler instigated a “shelter in place” drill. According to an e-mail sent out to parents and guardians the purpose of the drill was “twofold.”:
First and foremost, shelter in place is an emergency protocol that provides extra security measures when there is a threatening situation outside of the buildings. We should be as familiar with this protocol as we are with the exit procedure in the event of a fire. I also used this opportunity to conduct a k-9 assisted search of the campus. In partnership with local and regional law enforcement and a representative of the District Attorney’s office, the search took place during homeroom and lasted a little more than twenty minutes. – Principal Tutwiler in an e-mail to parents and guardians.
