Wayland Town Crier 3/31/10: Framingham, Wayland brace for record-high Sudbury River (with video). Riverfront towns distributed sandbags, switched on pumps and began closing roads yesterday as regional waterways again rose toward major flood stage, with some projected to reach record height. Water did crawl over Wayland's section of Rte. 20, which was reopened recently after previous flooding closed it for more than a week. With the new threat, police shut down one lane from the town center east to the Weston border in the afternoon, but still hoped to keep the other open at least long enough for the evening commute. To the southwest, the swollen Sudbury River and a tributary began cutting off Wayland's Pelham Island neighborhood, with residents warned to move their cars to a downtown lot. The town ran a school bus as a shuttle, planning to replace it today with the Boston Duck Tours service that proved popular the last time around. Along the Sudbury, a number of roads remained closed from the previous flood. While the state talked about placing sandbags and pumps to protect Rte. 20 in Wayland this time, the idea proved impractical, Swanick said. With the thoroughfare facing a new closure, the town library remained closed because of flooding and the police station continued to run on generator power.

Boston Globe 3/31/10: IRS will delay April 15 deadline for many in Massachusetts. Victims of severe storms and flooding in Massachusetts may qualify for tax relief from the Internal Revenue Service; relief comes in the form of some IRS deadlines being moved back to May 11, including the April 15 deadline for filing 2009 individual income tax returns. President Obama has declared the Massachusetts counties of Bristol, Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk, and Worcester as federal disaster areas qualifying for individual assistance. Taxpayers who reside or have a business in the disaster area qualify for the May 11 deadlines in many cases, the IRS said. The IRS said its computer systems automatically identify taxpayers located in the covered disaster area and apply automatic filing and payment relief.

NECN 3/30/10: Wayland, Mass. garden center uprooted – again. [With video] Normally this week, Tim Skehan and his employees at Russell's Garden Center would be preparing for the Easter weekend rush as shoppers come in for lilies and daffodils — and some begin to think about the long-awaited spring gardening season finally arriving. Instead, Monday found them preparing to evacuate thousands of dollars of merchandise from approaching floodwaters — for the second time in barely two weeks. "We're expecting that it might be even a foot and a half higher than it was last week," said Skehan, after downloading charts from the Internet predicting even higher flood levels on the Sudbury River upstream in Saxonville, Mass., than what brought a half-foot of water into the garden shop two weeks ago. "It's a drill, sadly, we're accustomed to. We are kind of in the flood plain." Skehan said during a 1987 flood, shop personnel used canoes to navigate through the garden center. "We're planning on it coming back into the store."

The Charles River in Dover and the Assabet in Sudbury were all expected to set record flood levels by afternoon, each rising 4 to 5 feet. Wayland residents were given formal evacuation notices Monday night, with police going door-to-door to alert Pelham Island residents that they may have to leave their homes as the river rises. The town has been struggling with flooding all month. "First we had the boat and then we had the school bus taking us back and forth," said one elderly resident.

Boston Globe 3/25/10: Builders, responding to changing demand, shrink size of new homes. An apparent shift in the popularity of oversized homes in favor of more modest, lower-cost designs is emerging amid signs of a local uptick in new construction that is mirroring national trends, according to builders and area officials. While housing starts and building permits are up modestly across the country this year after a dismal 2009, the average size of new homes has been shrinking. By the end of last year, the average home size had dropped to 2,373 square feet, from a peak of 2,507 square feet in 2007, the US Census Bureau reports. And local builders are responding, shrinking floor plans, eliminating formal living rooms and making other changes to slash square footage and bring down the cost of new homes. In Wayland, two new developments feature “green homes’’ of 3,000 to 3,500 square feet, with energy-efficient features and surrounded by conservation land. That’s a dramatic departure from the boom years, when some new homes were reaching 7,000 square feet, said Sarkis Sarkisian, Wayland’s town planner.

Wayland Town Crier 3/25/10: Wayland takes home first prize in second annual Civics Bee. Wayland took home first prize in the second annual Civics Bee, defeating both Weston and Sudbury on Sunday. The competition was hosted by Weston, last year’s winner, at the Country School cafeteria and organized by the League of Women Voters (LWV) of the three participating towns. Zaxaro Bennett, state president of the League, presided as the "Bee Master," reading the questions and making announcements. Richard Albert, assistant professor at Boston College School of Law, served in the role of judge. The three participating age groups were middle school, high school and adult. Unlike last year, the teams were not separated by age. Instead, each town’s team sent forward three representatives at a time from each age group – one adult, one high school student and one middle school student (or two middle school students in the case of Sudbury). The event is the brainchild of Wayland League member Sandy Coy, who began to worry about how young people knew so little about their country after watching a "Jaywalking" segment on The Tonight Show. "People know nothing," said Coy, "how can you defend rights you don’t know about?"

Boston Globe 3/25/10: Vote looms on Mass. realignment of high school football leagues, playoffs. In most years over the last two decades, either Acton-Boxborough or Lincoln-Sudbury has represented the league in the postseason playoffs (Westford Academy was the champion in 2005 and last fall, while Wayland High won back-to-back crowns in 2006 and 2007). Even if a playoff berth is not on the line, Lopez appreciates the competition, the only yearly matchup in the state featuring two high school football coaches with 200-plus career wins. However, the yearly showdown would be one of the casualties if a proposal to revamp the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association’s statewide football playoff system is approved by high school principals tomorrow. The proposal, spearheaded by Plymouth North High athletic director Bill Burkhead, calls for replacing longstanding leagues with six statewide divisions based on enrollment, and divided into four geographic regions. Under the plan, Acton-Boxborough would play in Division 1 North, while Lincoln-Sudbury is slated for Division 2 North. Under the proposal, 50 percent of the teams would qualify for the playoffs, which would lead to statewide champions in each division. The postseason would kick off the first week of November, and would not extend beyond the first Saturday in December, the Super Bowl date now in effect. However, traditional Thanksgiving Day rivalries would be retained.

Tufts Daily 3/18/10: Diving | Unlikely pair of Jumbo divers heads to nationals. (Includes video) Gardel grew up in Wayland, Mass., where she also was a youth gymnast. When Gardel’s hometown gym closed down during her seventh-grade year, she and her identical twin sister Melissa tried many sports before settling on diving during freshman year of high school. Gymnastics is the Gardel twins’ first love (Lindsay still maintains that if she could give up diving today for gymnastics, she would), but diving, with its focus on acrobatic motion, proved to be a worthy substitute. “Melissa and I were very hyperactive kids, and when we quit [gymnastics], we tried soccer, track, pole vaulting,” Linday Gardel said. “Our high school didn’t have gymnastics, but we had a friend on the diving team, and he basically dared us to come to practice. So we did, and it was the closest we could get to gymnastics.” The sisters spent their childhood doing all kinds of activities together, including a five-summer stint in a local circus troupe, where the duo’s “adagio” routine — one of the twins would lift up the other, who would engage in an array of acrobatic endeavors — dazzled audiences.

Wayland Town Crier 3/23/10: School Committee finalizes budget heading into Town Meeting. The School Committee voted to approve operational and capital budgets for the 2010-11 school year on Monday night, which are set to go for a vote before Town Meeting in May. The total school budget is $31.4 million, but after offsets, voters will be asked to approve a budget of $30.6 million, a decrease of $515,050, or 1.66 percent, from the budget for the 2009-10 school year, the first decrease in a school budget request in nearly 30 years. Offsets are revenue generated from school fees and transfers so that the amount of the budget paid for by local taxes is reduced.
