Wayland Town Crier 9/28/10: Update from Wayland High School Building Committee. The Wayland High School Building Committee (HSBC) is next scheduled to meet on Thursday, October 7 at 7pm at the Wayland Town Building in the small conference room on the second floor. Chris Semlies of Shawmut Design and Construction Co. reports the following construction activity for the week of September 27: The access ramp next to the trailer classrooms is complete. Underground site utility work will continue daily within the construction site, specifically in the areas closest to the History Building, Administration Building, and near the construction trailers. This will involve periodic vibration due to soil compaction equipment. Throughout the week, concrete foundation construction for the Administration Building will continue, much the same as it has for the past several weeks. Daily concrete placements and ongoing footing excavation and backfill can be expected. Soils continue to be trucked to and from the gravel pit adjacent to the lacrosse field, so please be aware of truck traffic in that area. Everyone should keep in mind the gravel pit area is off limits to non-construction personnel. We have posted signage to that effect. Trucking is prohibited after 2:30pm so that students can get to the field. We apologize for any inconvenience resulting from these activities. The community is invited to attend all HSBC meetings. For more information visit the HSBC website.

Boston Globe 9/26/10: Acton residents push for more restrictions on serious sex offenders. A group of Acton residents is pushing town and state officials to adopt residency and work restrictions for convicted sex offenders who are considered the most likely to repeat their crimes. Some cities may have adopted bylaws, though the state does not track those. And other communities, such as Wayland, have seen proposed bylaws rejected by Town Meeting voters. Wayland Police Chief Robert Irving said he supported his community’s proposed bylaw, which was narrowly defeated at Town Meeting about a year ago. He said it would make sense for the Legislature to create a statewide law. "I supported it because I thought it gave police another means to protect individuals from someone who has the propensity to possibly commit a crime," Irving said.

'Wayland A to Z': 'U' is for 'Underground Railroad'. Now and then tales circulate in Wayland about slaves having been hidden in one or another of the town’s older homes. Mysterious and seemingly perfect hiding places appear under stairwells or in basement niches, which help to make the stories believable. As yet, however, no house in Wayland can be documented as part of the Underground Railroad. We can only keep hoping that at some point a written document will emerge from a still undiscovered treasure trove of papers to shed new light on the subject. What we do know conclusively is that some Wayland people were supporters and contributors to the Underground Railroad and the abolitionist cause.

Wayland Town Crier 9/23/10: Wayland Mom ready to take the stage. Sheramy Vandernat of Wayland has a unique perspective of looking at life from two very different ends of the spectrum. Sher, as her friends and family call her, is the mother of a 2-year-old son and a 6-month-old daughter. She knows what it is like to give birth and the overwhelming responsibility of caring for an infant. As a registered nurse at VNA Care Network & Hospice, she also understands the end-of-life process. It is the in-between – something we call motherhood – which she is struggling with every day. She is not alone, and she is getting ready to share her story on the Boston stage.
Vandernat is one of 15 moms who will be featured in the stage show "Expressing Motherhood." After selling out in Los Angeles and New York City, the show is coming to Boston for the first time. "Expressing Motherhood" consists of real moms sharing their stories. Vandernat and a whole new cast made of East Coast moms will be appearing at the Durrell Theatre in Cambridge for three performances on Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. As each woman shares a slice of her experience about being a mom, comedy and drama ensue.
Tickets are available online.

Wayland Town Crier 9/23/10: Spitz: Group aims to link seniors and services. If my mother-in-law has a problem with her plumbing, finding help could be tough. We can't diagnose the problem over the phone, so do we try the Yellow Pages in a city 1,000 miles away? Google and see what pops up? Tell her to ask friends for recommendations? Consult consumer comments on Angie's List? What if the plumber charges her twice the going rate, or doesn't really fix what's wrong? If she lived a little closer, it would be a whole lot easier. Local councils on aging might be able to steer us in the right direction.

Boston Globe 9/23/10: West of Boston, some good schools find US testing standards unrealistic – The Boston Globe.
As a federal deadline approaches for making all students proficient in English and math, officials in some top area school districts find themselves in an unfamiliar position — explaining why their schools aren’t making enough progress. A Globe review of this year’s MCAS results, released this month, shows that just under half of area schools — approximately 133 out of 269 — met the “adequate yearly progress’’ standard set under the federal No Child Left Behind law. Nearly every school district in the area had at least one school that did not meet the standard — including such high-performing districts as Arlington, Belmont, Brookline, Newton, Wayland, and Wellesley — and some school officials said the numbers paint an unfair portrait.
