Metrowest Daily News 10/31/10: Teachers warned about connecting with students online. More than a week after Norton schools implemented a new policy restricting teachers' communication with students through Facebook, most administrators in MetroWest said their schools are not considering similar actions. But officials in the region said teachers must be cautious in their online interactions with students. "We've advised our staff that they should be careful," said Wayland Superintendent Gary Burton. "It's been on our radar screen for a while."

Wayland Public Safety Building fix to cost at least $1.2M

Wayland Town Crier 10/29/10: Wayland Public Safety Building fix to cost at least $1.2M. Fixing the Public Safety Building will cost at least $1.2 million, selectmen were told last night, but that won't guarantee that the basement will never flood again. The town could spend as much as $2.3 million to fix structural and other problems at the building, but it might not be worth it, Director of Public Facilities John Moynihan said. The structure sustained major damage during floods this past spring, virtually shutting it down for several weeks. Major repairs call for moving mechanical, electrical and communications apparatus out of harm's way. Repairing the existing slab in the basement, fixing the holes and relocating all the equipment to safer areas, Moynihan said, could be done for $1.2 million. Another $1 million could be spent to do the job "from soup to nuts" but is probably not justified, he said. The area suffers severe floods every five to 10 years, he said. "The bottom line," Moynihan told the board, "is that I cannot get the engineers to guarantee that, even with the big number, this will not happen again."

Wayland family organizes Walk to Defeat ALS

Wayland Town Crier 10/29/10: Wayland family organizes Walk to Defeat ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, strikes one in 50,000 people. It is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord and eventually the muscles throughout the body. As the disease progresses, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is gradually lost. The cause of ALS remains obscure, treatment is virtually nonexistent, and the prognosis is very poor. The situation is further complicated by the fact that, although there is an ALS gene, only a very small percent of individuals with the condition carry it. Dana Miller of Wayland, mother of four middle and high school-aged children, was diagnosed with ALS two years ago. She continues to live at home, while her family intends to fight on her behalf and for others like her. On Sunday, Nov. 7, Dana’s children Spencer and Hannah, both 13, along with younger siblings Kyle, 10, and Marley 7, are organizing the first Wayland ALS Walk to raise money for research and new treatments for the disease.

WHS grad runs for Secretary of the Commonwealth

Wayland Student Press Network 10/27/10: WHS grad runs for Secretary of the Commonwealth. It was his freshman year of high school, and despite being the new kid – he had just skipped a grade after moving back to Wayland – James Henderson was running for class president. He didn’t stand much of a chance. “Let’s get real, it’s a popularity contest,” said Henderson, a 1983 Wayland High grad. “What were the issues?” Though Henderson lost that student government election, he has put his name back on the ballot 30 years later, making an independent run for the statewide office of Secretary of the Commonwealth. He’s hoping he’ll have better luck at the polls this time, as he campaigns on how he would improve the position that he calls the “chief information officer” of the state.

A feast for opera lovers

Wayland Town Crier 10/28/10: Wayland by the Way: A feast for opera lovers. Opera lovers are a passionate crowd. They’ll argue endlessly about the best composer – Verdi, Wagner, Mozart or Puccini? The best opera – "Othello," "Parsifal," "The Marriage of Figaro" or "Tosca"? The best soprano – Tebaldi, Nillson, Callas or Voigt? And on and on. Although no discussion is ever closed in this group, a number of us would agree that Mozart’s "Don Giovanni," the ultimately tragic tale of an unrepentant womanizer and murderer, is the greatest of all. On Nov. 3 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wayland Library’s Raytheon Room, opera enthusiast and scholar Phil Radoff will present a two-part series on "Don Giovanni." The presentations will feature video excerpts of an early performance from the Salzburg Festival. The first evening will feature Act 1 and the second evening Act 2.

Wayland High School Project Designed by HMFH Architects Starts Construction

Boston/SF.com 10/28/10: Wayland High School Project Designed by HMFH Architects Starts Construction. HMFH Architects, a leading architectural firm focused on the design of innovative learning environments, announced that construction has commenced on the new Wayland High School in Wayland, Massachusetts. Slated for completion for the 2012 school year, the $56.2 million project includes 160,000 SF of new construction and 40,000 SF of renovation. KVAssociates is the Owner’s Project Manager and Shawmut Design and Construction is the Construction Manager at Risk (CM-at-Risk) under Massachusetts’s new construction statute. The original Wayland High School was designed and built in the early 1960’s and widely touted for its modern form – a modular, team-teaching, California-style campus of eight buildings. Thirty years after it opened, selected upgrades such as roof replacement, system repairs and new finishes were made to the facility, but the physical condition and the energy performance of the school continued to deteriorate. “This long-awaited project will ensure that the Town of Wayland continues its tradition of excellence in delivering quality education,” said Gary Burton, superintendent of the Wayland Public Schools. “Our Building Committee has been working closely with HMFH Architects since 2004 to define the best ways to modernize our physical facilities so that our already successful school can continue to thrive and excel. We are confident that this construction process will result in a superior new high school.”
