Worcester Business Journal 11/30/10: Local Communities Seek Green Designation. Several communities across MetroWest are looking to tap into a state energy efficiency program that could qualify them for millions of dollars in grants. They want to be part of the newest class of "green communities" in the state, a designation reserved for cities and towns that have committed to reducing their public energy consumption and have enacted a handful of energy efficiency measures. Communities including Marlborough, Wayland, Medway, Harvard and Gardner joined 15 others around the state that applied to become green communities. Municipal officials should learn in the coming weeks if they will join the 35 communities in the state that have already earned the designation.

Wayland Town Crier 11/24/10p: Towns to test traffic before consolidating transfer stations. Sudbury and Wayland officials have proposed closing the Sudbury transfer station two Saturdays in December to test another element of criteria before consolidating the two stations, Sudbury Town Manager Maureen Valente said at the selectmen’s meeting Monday evening. “Valente and Wayland Town Administrator Fred Turkington discussed closing Sudbury’s Transfer Station for two consecutive Saturdays to see if one location can handle the traffic,” said Sudbury Board of Selectmen Chairman John Drobinski. Because both towns want to reduce the cost of municipal services by sharing and improved cooperation, they implemented the transfer station pilot project Sept. 28. The pilot program allows residents of either town to use the transfer station in Wayland on Tuesdays and in Sudbury on Thursdays. Currently, residents of each town continue to use their own transfer station on Saturdays. If the transfer station pilot project proves beneficial, Sudbury and Wayland could each save between $40,000 and $60,000 annually.

"We are now in the process of getting a governor's warrant so we can bring him back here," Wayland Police Chief Robert Irving said.

Even if the maximum gap between residential and commercial rates was adopted, the relief for the average residential taxpayer would amount to only $300.

Wayland Town Crier 11/22/10: Update from Wayland High School Building Committee. The High School Building Committee (HSBC) is scheduled to meet on Thursday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Commons conference room at Wayland High School. The following is an overview provided by Chris Semlies of Shawmut Design and Construction regarding construction activities for the coming week: The site will be closed on Thanksgiving Day but we are working on Friday, Nov. 26 and likely on Saturday, Nov. 27. Next week’s work will be similar to the current week, with metal wall framing at Building B and steel erection at Building A. Steel erection at Building B is complete and Building A is progressing rapidly. Those very high steel trusses that you see will support the roof over the new stage! You can also see the sloped steel that will support the audience of the auditorium. The work day for steel erection will extend until 4:30 p.m. typically. Steel deliveries will continue to arrive daily via one to two flat-bed trailers, typically between 8 and 9 a.m. Underground site utility work will continue daily within the construction site. This will involve periodic vibration due to soil compaction equipment. Soils continue to be trucked to and from the gravel pit adjacent to the lacrosse field intermittently, so please be aware of truck traffic in that area. Everyone should keep in mind the gravel pit area is off limits to non-construction personnel. We have posted signage to that effect. Trucking is prohibited after 2:30pm so that students can get to the field. Activities continue related to the construction of the façade mockup near the south wall of the Administration Building. We apologize for any inconvenience resulting from these activities. For more information visit the HSBC’s website.
