Wayland Town Crier 12/30/10: Minuteman School Committee to consider changes to regional agreement. The Minuteman Regional Vocational School Committee could vote on recommended changes to the district’s regional agreement on Tuesday, Jan. 4, the same day the Regional Agreement Task Force reviews a funding formula proposed in its draft recommendations. Officials said the task force’s proposed changes would keep Minuteman in line to receive state funding for a future building project, while hopefully making it more attractive to join the district for neighboring communities currently sending dozens of students to the career and technical high school in Lexington.

Boston Globe 12/29/10: Listing Broker Hit With Triple Damages For Breaching Escrow Duties. The facts of this case are a bit unusual. Listing Broker represented the seller in a purchase of residential property in Wayland, MA. Under the standard purchase and sale agreement, the buyer posted a $92,500 escrow deposit which Listing Broker held as an escrow agent. The same buyer apparently used Listing Broker on another transaction and owed it nearly $35,000 in fees.

Parmenter Community Health Care receives grant

Wayland Town Crier 12/28/10: Parmenter Community Health Care receives grant. Parmenter Community Health Care of Wayland was awarded a grant from the Harvard Pilgrim Community Spirit 9/11 Grant Program. The $500 grant will be used to assist in the purchase of grocery items for distribution to Wayland residents in need. The Harvard Pilgrim Community Spirit 9/11 Grant Program was created in commemoration to those lost on Sept. 11, 2001, through a special contribution to the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation. The program provides Harvard Pilgrim employees with an opportunity to seek Harvard Pilgrim’s assistance in funding community activities that they regularly support through their own donations of time and/or money. Since its inception in September 2002, the Harvard Pilgrim Community Spirit 9/11 Grant Program has provided hundreds of organizations with financial support and in-kind contributions worth over $1.5 million.

Banished dog returns to Wayland

Wayland Town Crier 12/23/10: Banished dog returns to Wayland. Laska, a fox-hound mix who was banished from Wayland last May, has been brought back to town by her owners Mark and Stella Frishman of Garden Path. An order of permanent restraint was handed down in October 2009, along with an order to construct a fence, after nearly 20 complaints were received by the town – including for two bites and several unleashed incidents – dating back to November 2007.

Registration for Pan-Massachusetts Challenge opens Jan. 18

Wayland Town Crier 12/22/10: Registration for Pan-Massachusetts Challenge opens Jan. 18. Online registration opens to the public on January 18. The 32nd annual event will offer a new 25-mile route, which will join 10 existing routes that range from 47 to 190 miles. It will bring less experienced riders from Babson College in Wellesley to the high school in Sharon. The one-day, 25-mile ride will take place on Sunday of PMC weekend. Riders will be required to raise a minimum of $500. Open to 5,500 cyclists, the PMC will be held on Aug. 6 and 7, 2011. This year’s goal is to raise $34 million for the Jimmy Fund, which supports adult and pediatric cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. During the past 31 years, the PMC has raised $303 million for the world-renowned cancer center. There are 11 route options which include five one-day and six two-day treks, which range from 25 to 190 miles, making it an ideal charity ride for cyclists of all abilities. Cyclists hailed from 34 states and six countries in 2010, and thousands return yearly to ride in the event. Minimum fundraising requirements range from $500 to $4,200, depending upon the route chosen. Support services include meals, drinks, massages and overnight accommodations. A screening committee last night identified the top three candidates to replace school Superintendent Gary Burton, who is retiring at the end of the academic year. They are: Jonathan Landman, assistant superintendent in Randolph; Paul Stein, deputy superintendent in Newton; and Anne Wilson, assistant superintendent in Brookline. The School Committee hopes to make a selection by Feb. 7.

Finalists for Wayland school superintendent position to be revealed

Metrowest Daily News 12/21/10: Finalists for Wayland school superintendent position to be revealed. On Dec. 21, Future Management Systems (FMS) will present the recommended finalists for the superintendent position to the Wayland School Committee and will plan the interview dates for these candidates. Current Superintendent Gary Burton is retiring next year after 18 years on the job. FMS recently developed a Leadership Profile Report that reflects information gathered from the Wayland community, including findings from the focus groups, telephone interviews and online survey, and represents the optimal "fit" factors desired for the leadership position. In addition, the School Committee formed a Search Committee that will be responsible for reviewing applications, conducting screening interviews, and recommending final candidates to the School Committee. Residents organizing Historic New England fundraiser in Boston

Wayland Town Crier 12/21/10: Residents organizing Historic New England fundraiser in Boston. A black-tie fundraiser to kick off Historic New England’s 2011 season will take place on Friday, January 7 at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston. Proceeds support Historic New England’s Preservation Maintenance Fund, which serves to contribute to the long term sustainability of Historic New England’s properties and finances. All funds raised at the event will be matched one-to-one by an anonymous foundation. Wayland residents serving on the committee for the gala are Mrs. William C.S. Hicks, Barbara Jordan and Robert Pemberton. Tickets are $500 per person, with sponsorship option available starting at $10,000. For more information call 617-994-5934 or e-mail. Wayland Town Crier 12/20/10: Man who fled to Seattle arraigned for Wayland Country Club thefts. A shoplifting arrest in a Seattle grocery store led police there to link the 50-year-old suspect to a theft that occurred thousands of miles away and six years in the past. Mark Miller had been arrested in Wayland in 2004 after officers responding to an alarm at Wayland Country Club's pro shop pulled him over and found his car full of stolen golf clubs. Police had been investigating a series of burglaries at the country club and thought Miller was selling the goods over the Internet. Miller posted bail but then fled.

Seattle man in custody for 2004 breaking and entering

Wayland Town Crier 12/17/10: Seattle man in custody for 2004 breaking and entering. Mark T. Miller, 50, of 2922 39th Ave. Southwest, Seattle, Wash., has been charged by Wayland Police with being a fugitive from justice, breaking and entering in the nighttime, destruction of property, larceny from a building, larceny over $250, and possession of burglarious tools. According to Wayland Police, Mark T. Miller was arrested for breaking and entering into the Wayland Country Club on March 6, 2004. After his arrest, Miller posted bail and later fled Massachusetts to Seattle, Wash. Over six years later, on Sept. 17, 2010, Seattle authorities had arrested Miller for shoplifting. The Wayland Police along with the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office were able to secure a governor’s warrant for Miller as he would not waive extradition to Massachusetts. On Dec. 15, 2010, Miller appeared at Middlesex Superior Court with his attorney and was taken into custody. He is currently being held without bail. Arresting and investigating officer is Wayland Detective Sgt. Jamie Berger.
