Pajama’ed Children Learn About “Tzedakah”

Wayland Patch 1/31/11: Pajama'ed Children Learn About "Tzedakah". Decked out in their finest pajamas, preschool and elementary children got in the spirit of "tzedakah" Sunday morning at Congregation Or Atid in Wayland. Tzedakah is literally translated from Hebrew as "justice" or "righteousness", but is more commonly interpreted as "charity," and Pajama-Rama Party participants learned the concept while having a good time themselves. The children, along with their parents, enjoyed songs and stories, decorated pillow cases and ate milk and cookies all for a good cause. Donations from the event supported two charity efforts: The PJ Library, an organization that sends Jewish books and music to parents of infants and children up to 8 years old, and the Pajama Program, which provides new, warm pajamas to children in need throughout the United States and worldwide. In fact, Pajama-Rama Party attendees brought new pajamas to the event which could be seen piling up at the foot of a Pajama-Rama sign located in the front lobby of the synagogue.

At Wayland club, they’re taking a shot at pickleball

Metrowest Daily News 1/29/11: At Wayland club, they're taking a shot at pickleball. Let the record show Joe Bausk and Dick Gellis are the pioneers who brought the sport of pickleball to MetroWest and maybe to the entire Bay State. The program coordinator at the Longfellow Club in Wayland, Gellis has been braving blizzards and soggy socks on Friday mornings to teach the game's rudiments to a handful of enthusiastic adult learners on the kid-sized courts of the Zip Zone. Played on a badminton-sized court and named after its co-inventor's cocker spaniel Pickles who liked to grab loose balls with its teeth, pickleball combines elements of pingpong and platform tennis.

Wayland Middle PTO Learns about Cyberbullying, Internet Safety

Wayland Patch 1/28/11: Wayland Middle PTO Learns about Cyberbullying, Internet Safety. Bullying exists today just as it has for generations. The difference now is that bullies have extended their reach beyond playgrounds and school hallways. They have – believe it or not, Parents – been invited right into your home. The computers and hand-held digital devices that have improved access to information and the ability to stay connected have also become the new “playground” for bullies. Cyberbullying might seem like something that only happens in tragic news reports in places far from Wayland, but the reality, according to Wayland Police Chief Robert Irving, is that Wayland isn’t immune. The Wayland Middle School PTO invited Irving and Officer Mark Wilkins to present a program about cyberbullying and Internet safety during its Thursday night meeting in the WMS library.

"How many (of the proposed personnel) would be benefits eligible?" asked Cherry Karlson, chairman of the Finance Committee. The requests are for the equivalent of nearly seven positions, said Barbara Fletcher, vice chairman of the School Committee, some of which would trigger health care costs on the town budget. Wayland one of few schools to hold class Thursday (with Video)

WHDH 7/27/11: Wayland one of few schools to hold class Thursday. Many schools in the Commonwealth were closed on Thursday for another snowstorm, but one school just delayed start time for 1.5 hours. On the South Shore, Norwell always has the reputation of never closing during snowstorms, but they were closed on Thursday. Many communities in the Metro West were also closed today, but Wayland was not one of them. The snow looked inviting, but the piles in Wayland will have to wait, because school was on – just 1.5 hours late.

Neighbor Brigade invades MetroWest

Wayland Town Crier 1/24/11: Neighbor Brigade invades MetroWest. It's the little things that can make a difference. A ride to the pharmacy. A prepared meal waiting for you after a long day at the hospital. A community effort that began quietly in Wayland in 2002 has begun to take root in other MetroWest communities with a simple mission: to help neighbors in need. When Wayland friends Pam Washek and the late Jean Seiden were diagnosed with cancer within weeks of each other in 2002, they did what any friend would do – offer a helping hand. A small network of friends and neighbors that delivered meals blossomed eventually into the Wayland Angels, a group providing basic services to families in need. Between then and 2010, eight other Angels chapters sprung up across the state.
