Abrahams Group Presents Options for New Wayland Water Rates

Wayland Patch 2/18/11: Abrahams Group Presents Options for New Wayland Water Rates. Last week Wayland’s Board of Public Works held a public hearing to discuss the water rate report and options for new rates as compiled by The Abrahams Group. Concerned citizens filled the Large Hearing Room at the Wayland Town Building to hear the report and express opinions of their own. The forum and discussions stem from a capital surcharge – originally set at $236 per meter – that was adopted by the Wayland Water Department in early 2009 as a means to pay the $10 million debt service incurred through the construction of a water treatment plant.

Wayland High School grad’s movie needs help

Wayland Town Crier 2/18/11: Wayland High School grad's movie needs help. "Girlfriend," the full-length motion picture, written and directed by 1998 Wayland High School graduate Justin Lerner, and starring his classmate Evan Sneider, was shot entirely on location in Wayland during September and October of 2009. Sneider, who has Down Syndrome, transcends his disability and turns in not only a stellar acting performance, but also, along with Lerner, a groundbreaking artistic achievement. "Girlfriend" is the first American motion picture to cast a person with Down Syndrome as the lead actor. "Girlfriend" is asking fans to help finish the film by paying for the marketing and publicity costs to bring it to as many theaters as possible. They set up an innovative fundraising site and are offering several exiting "perks" for donations of all amounts. If you want to see "Girlfriend" and the beautiful town of Wayland on the big screen in theaters across the country, if you want to help two Wayland natives begin their careers, or if you want to support a film that empowers young people with disabilities, please visit the site and make a donation. Any support, however small, will get this wonderful film closer to reaching the thousands of audience members patiently waiting for its release.

Summer Arts Program at Cambridge School of Weston

Award winning photographer and filmmaker Courtney Bent will be heading the media department at Summer Arts at The Cambridge School of Weston this June & July. Courtney's most recent film, ‘Shooting Beauty’ about a photography program she started for individuals with Cerebral Palsy, has been the recipient of over 30 awards and grants including 12 Audience Awards and Best Documentary awards from film festivals through out the United States.  Courtney will be teaching photography and film classes this summer. State funds improvements for Lake Cochituate, Charles River

Wayland Town Crier 2/16/11: State funds improvements for Lake Cochituate, Charles River. The Department of Conservation and Recreation is awarding $1 million in matching funds for 32 projects in state parks and other facilities, including improvements in Framingham, Natick, Wayland and Weston. The money comes through DCR’s Partnerships Matching Funds Program, which accepts applications from local organizations willing to provide a match for capital projects. A DCR project manager oversees the projects in consultation with partners. Local projects include treatment of a boat channel at Lake Cochituate State Park using approved herbicides, hand-pulling and removal of roof crowns. The state's partners are the Wayland Surface Water Quality Committee and Framingham Conservation Commission.

Race to Nowhere Screening on Thursday, March 3

Friends of Wayland Youth and Family Services is screening The Race to Nowhere, a documentary that focuses on the high-pressure, high-achievement culture surrounding American children and teenagers, on Thursday March 3 at 7:30 PM in the Wayland Little Theater.  The future success and security of our children depends on parental guidance and community commitment in striking an effective balance between achievement and overall health and well-being.  Come view the film and contemplate the themes it raises about the systemic issues of achievement pressure and its potential consequences while exploring parental, teacher, and peer roles in its creation.  Registration is open to the general public and there is no charge to attend this event. Wayland mulls $880K in capital spending

Wayland mulls $880K in capital spending. Voters will decide whether to approve $880,000 in capital spending at the polls on April 5 and as part of the overall budget presentation at Town Meeting starting April 7. The town's policy on capital spending states that all building repairs, field improvements and major equipment and vehicles costing more than $100,000 should be decided upon by a Proposition 2 1/2 debt exclusion question on the ballot. Finance Committee Chairman Cherry Karlson said at Monday's selectmen meeting that the proposal will add new debt more slowly than old debt is being retired, resulting in a savings of $20 in property taxes for the average household in fiscal 2012.

Residents, DPW Talk the Future of Hannah Williams Park

Wayland Patch 2/15/11: Residents, DPW Talk the Future of Hannah Williams Park. The Department of Public Works and citizens from throughout Wayland have begun discussions regarding the future of the Hannah Williams Playground on Main Street. In recent years, the play equipment at the park has drawn concerns that the aging wood can lead to splinters and that the chemicals used to treat that wooden playground equipment, popular when the structure was constructed years ago, are, in fact, not particularly healthy for children. Don Oullette, DPW director, has been gathering information for reconfiguring the park and presented a few options to citizens during a meeting late last week.
