SUMMER HOURS.  We are now well into summer.  During the summer our weekend hours are different than they are during the rest of the year.  In the summer we are open on Saturdays from 10-1, closed Sundays and open regular hours on weekdays.  We will also be closed on Friday, August 12, and Saturday, August 13, for building repairs (more about this below).

LIMITED LIBRARY SERVICES AT THE END OF AUGUST.  At the end of this summer, the main floor of the library will undergo planned maintenance, which was deferred for one year due to last spring’s flooding.  The carpet on the main floor will be replaced, the damaged plaster on ceilings will be repaired, and the whole upstairs will get a fresh coat of paint.  The library will be completely closed on Friday, August 12, and Saturday, August 13, to allow the staff to relocate upstairs operations to the Raytheon Room.  The library will open on Monday, August 15, with limited services for adults in the Raytheon Room but full service in the Youth Services Department.  The work is expected to take between two to three weeks.  During this time there will be no public access to the upstairs collection, but items may be placed on reserve, and you will be able to pick them up here at our library. 

ART EXHIBIT BY CARRIE SALSBERG.  Carrie Salsberg, whose work is on exhibit in the library foyer during July, is a multimedia artist and art instructor residing in Wayland and Grantham, NH, who over the years has studied art at diverse schools, museums, and galleries.  Her works include acrylic painting, mixed media collage, ceramics, jewelry, mosaics, stained glass, murals, floor cloths, and decorative furnishings.  

OIL PAINTINGS BY NANCY MOLVIG.  During July, Nancy Molvig’s oil paintings are on exhibit in the Raytheon Room.  Formerly a resident of Concord now living in Lincoln, Nancy is most drawn to her native New England landscapes and seascapes for inspiration. 

GET CAUGHT READING!  Our lower level display case features an exhibit of paintings and photographs of people reading in many locations.  Do you have a great photo of you or a family member reading?  If so, drop it off at our display case as we’re planning another display of local people reading.

BOSTON HARBOR ISLANDS PASS.  We have a new pass for the Boston Harbor Islands.  It provides 2-for-1 ferry tickets to the Boston Harbor Islands national park area to either Georges or Spectacle Islands for up to four people and is available Monday through Friday through October 8. SUMMER READING PROGRAM.  Registration for Summer Reading continues online at waylandlibrary.org.  This year’s theme is “One World Many Stories” for children and “You Are Here” for teens.  Participants can log onto our summer reading website to write reviews of favorite books and read reviews that other kids have written.  See below for a list of fun programs we are sponsoring for children this summer. 

• Friday Family Flicks.  Fridays, July 22 and 29 at 2 p.m.  Children ages 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult.  On July 22, we’ll be showing an animated comedy-adventure following the journey of Rango, a sheltered chameleon living as an ordinary family pet while facing a major identity crisis. Rated PG.  Then on July 29, we’ll be screening the movie based on the book Lemonade Mouth by Wayland’s own Mark Peter Hughes in which five students meet in detention and start an impromptu jam session while cleaning the music room.  Rated G. 
• Wordly Crafts for Kids, Tuesday, July 26, at 11:00 a.m. Try different crafts from around the world.  Ages 5 and up. 
• “Everybody Says Hello!” with Mary Jo Maichack, Thursday, July 28, from 2-3 p.m.  There are so many ways to say "hello" and sing and tell stories.  With Mary Jo we might learn a song in Japanese, “plant" cabbages the French way, or help act out a story from Vietnam!  The music and stories in her show explore other languages and cultures.  Ages 3 and up.  
• Farmer's Market Storytimes, Wednesdays in August, 2:30-3:00 p.m.  Kids, join us for songs and stories at Russell's Farmer's Market.  All ages welcome.
