Wayland Patch 8/26/11: Individual Preparedness is Key, Wayland Town Officials Stress – Wayland, MA Patch. Representatives from Wayland’s police and fire departments, Department of Public Works, town administrator’s office and others met this morning to discuss the town’s preparedness for Hurricane Irene. Doug Leard, chair of the Local Emergency Planning Committee, said a primary topic at that meeting was communication. “If we do lose all phones and communication, how do we get to people?” he said they discussed. “Hopefully, the winds aren’t going to be so strong that we’re going to lose cell towers. But if something happens, how do we communicate to the public? If we lose cable, cell phones, telephone lines, getting information out to the public is a problem, hence the need for individual preparation.” Leard stressed that it’s difficult to know exactly what to expect when Hurricane Irene blows through Wayland, so the best course of action is to prepare for the worst.

In a Natick studio that resembles a cross between Geppetto's workshop and the Unabomber's cabin, Lang transformed five donated bedpans into an airborne mobile titled "Fleet" that'll float beneath a canopy of fluttering paper wings in his soon-to-open exhibit at the Boston Sculptors Gallery.

Elon Pendulum 8/24/11: Astley's legacy memorialized by campus, hometown.Warmth and beauty were two of Lauren Astley's top criteria in choosing a college. "If I am in a beautiful place, I will learn," she once told her father, Malcolm Astley. In the weeks since her death on July 4, warmth and beauty are just two of the many adjectives used by friends and family to describe Lauren. She would have arrived on campus this week as a member of the class of 2015. Incoming freshman Lauren Bolusky would have been one of Lauren's seven suitemates in Colclough Hall this year. While Bolusky never got to know Lauren, she is one of the many students on Elon's campus working to ensure her presence in the Class of 2015 is not forgotten. "It is pretty crazy to think that we all consider each other 'family members' even though most of us have never met, but it's the truth," Bolusky said. "No one sees her as a girl they never met, everyone sees her as a member of our Elon family."

Wayland Patch 8/25/11: Wayland Selectmen Reach Settlement with Attorney General. Wayland selectmen Monday night voted to accept Attorney General Martha Coakley’s settlement offer relative to an Open Meeting Law (OML) violation at a July 8, 2010, Board of Selectmen meeting. The terms of the settlement require selectmen to pay a $500 civil penalty and for every member to attend OML training, a criterion that can be satisfied by viewing a video of the regional training offered by the attorney general’s office. The terms also note that the Board of Selectmen admits the violation, but disagrees with the AG’s finding that the violation was intentional. Selectmen Monday agreed with all terms of the attorney general’s settlement, but in their vote included the additional point that they did not feel taxpayers should be responsible for paying the fine. They agreed to cover it themselves.
Wayland Town Crier 8/26/11: Wayland selectmen to pay fine for Open Meeting Law violation. The Board of Selectmen has agreed to pay a $500 fine for a hushed conversation before the start of a July 2010 meeting in which four members were caught on the local cable access station discussing candidates for a town commission. Selectmen Chairman Tom Fay said the four selectmen – Fay, then-Chairman Steve Correia, former state Rep. Susan Pope and John Bladon – will pay the fine personally, so "no town money will be used to pay the penalty." The money will go into the state's General Fund.

Wayland Town Crier 8/24/11: Wayland Planning Board clears way for assisted living facility. A Planning Board decision last night effectively opens the way for a developer to build an assisted living facility on the now-defunct Lee's Farm Stand property at 134 Boston Post Road. The board's decision allows the 10-acre property to be subdivided into two 5-acre pieces. The Northbridge Companies, which runs several health care facilities, has signed an agreement with the property owners, the Bongiorno family, for the rear of the lot. The company plans to build a 65,000-square-foot assisted living and memory care home. The fate of the front 5 acres has not yet been determined. Let's Encourage Environmental Sustainability and Pine Brook Associations, which are affiliated, want to ensure that part of the property, on the north side of Rte. 20 near Pine Brook Road, will be preserved as open space and used for farming. LEES chairwoman Joan Blair read a statement on behalf of LEES/Pine Brook, appealing to the Planning Board to wait before approving any plan for the site. "The 400 people on our mailing list from all over town have expressed deep concern that the landscape of our town will be forever altered if the front parcel of the land is developed," she said. "The $1.5 million price tag recently established by the sellers indicates such development."

Wayland Patch 8/23/11: Wayland Students Spend Their Summer Giving Back. Two hundred hours – otherwise known as 12,000 minutes or 8.3 days. No, it isn’t a countdown or the length of a fabulous vacation, it’s the combined number of hours donated this summer by about 15 Wayland High School students who spent their time away from school doing everything from grooming horses at Pond Hollow Farm, to moving books at the Wayland Town Building, to plucking tomato worms off plants in the area community gardens. The students took part in a summer community service program designed to help them meet their required community service hours for junior and senior privileges at Wayland High School, and, if coordinator Amy Schoeff had anything to say about it, create lifelong volunteers in the process. “My goal is to get the kids to look at community service not just as something they need to get done,” said Schoeff, who works as a school nurse at WHS. “[I want them] to realize they have something to give.”

Nathaniel Fujita, the man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend Lauren Astley in Wayland on July 3, will remain at the State House of Corrections in Billerica, held without bail following his arraignment at Middlesex Country Superior Court Aug. 23. Fujita arrived in Courtroom 430 at about 11:15 a.m. wearing khaki pants and a blue button-down shirt. He did not appear to look at his father, seated directly behind the defendant, nor did he show any emotion. Fujita spoke only to whisper pleas of not guilty to a first-degree murder charge and several assault and battery charges in connection to the murder of Astley.

Wayland Town Crier 8/23/11: Fujita pleads not guilty; prosecutor provides more details of murder. After breaking up with boyfriend Nathaniel Fujita, Lauren Astley went to visit him at his Wayland home July 3 in an attempt to make him feel better, a prosecutor said in Middlesex Superior Court today. "In an act of friendship, Lauren Astley reached out and said, 'Let's get together,' " prosecutor Lisa McGovern said during Fujita's arraignment. "The defendant repaid that kindness by killing her." When Fujita, 18, entered the courtroom, he did not look at his parents, Tomo and Beth Fujita. In a voice barely above a whisper, he pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery.
Boston Globe 8/24/11: Texts to ex-beau preceded Wayland slaying. In the final hours of her life, Lauren Astley exchanged a flurry of text messages and phone calls with her former boyfriend, Nathaniel Fujita. She wanted to talk. They decided to meet after she finished work. "Call me when you get out," Fujita wrote. Astley drove to his house. She parked near the fence so his mother wouldn’t see. Then she texted him one word: "Here." It was the last message that she ever sent. Fujita, the 18-year-old accused of murdering his former girlfriend and then dumping her body in a marsh, pleaded not guilty yesterday to a charge of first-degree murder in Middlesex Superior Court. The haunting exchange of text messages between the onetime teen sweethearts emerged at the court hearing.
