Wayland Patch 9/28/11: Wayland Police Make Arrest Following Prescription Fraud Investigation. A months long investigation led Wednesday to the arrest of 40-year-old David P. Shock on multiple counts of prescription drug fraud. Shock, of 180 Atlantic St., in Gloucester, has been charged with seven counts of fraudulently obtaining prescription medicine and seven counts of uttering (writing) a false prescription. Police say he originally provided them with a Wayland address, but that turned out to be a false address. Wayland Police Department Det. Sgt. Boston Globe 9/23/11: Wayland man faces new charges in trooper’s death – The Boston Globe. In a rare case of delayed prosecution, a Wayland man faces up to 15 years in prison on motor vehicle homicide charges, after the state trooper he hit eight years ago while driving drunk died from her injuries in June. “We always knew, unfortunately, that the injuries to the trooper were significant and obviously in this case caused her death, and as a result of that we have these new charges,’’ said Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz, speaking moments after William Senne, 26, was arraigned in Plymouth Superior Court here. Senne pleaded not guilty and was ordered released on personal recognizance. He has already served two years in jail in connection with the July 2003 crash that left Trooper Ellen Engelhardt with massive head trauma and unable to talk or walk. Cruz said there is a possibility that the time Senne has served may apply to any future sentence if he is convicted.

Local students named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2010 Preliminary sat/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, totaling about 16,000 students and representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. Semifinalists from Wayland High School include Ryan Budnick, Kaitlin Curran and Elena Drews. These high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $34 million that will be offered next spring.

Wayland Town Crier 9/19/11: Weston and Wayland teens make most of 'mitzvah' projects. On a family trip to Israel, Isabella Laufer of Weston visited the Mount Herzl Military Cemetery in Jerusalem and learned about the non-Israeli soldiers who have died defending Israel. This visit had such a profound impact on Laufer that she decided to support Israeli soldiers for her community service project (called a “mitzvah project”) as part of her bar mitzvah. Laufer ran bake sales and handmade jewelry sales to raise enough money to “adopt” a troop in the Israeli Defense Force through an organization called “A Package From Home.” Her hard work and creativity ensured that soldiers who do not have family in Israel or who are severely wounded received care packages.
