State lawmakers set to redraw US House map

Boston Globe 10/23/11: State lawmakers set to redraw US House map. Before the elections of 1812, the Democratic-Republican Party redrew the legislative map to its distinct advantage, carving a salamander-shaped path through Essex County in a shameless quest for political gain. Wags dubbed it the "Gerrymander," after Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry, and the name stuck. So, regrettably, did the practice. Ever since, legislators have paid dutiful tribute to Gerry and his allies with elaborate schemes designed to protect partisans and punish rivals. Today, the state’s configuration of congressional districts is a tortuous mess, a frenetic zigzag that splits school systems, somehow trisects Wellesley, Weston, and Wayland, and improbably threads a needle to connect Brookline and Buzzards Bay. Now, the politically fraught task of carving up the Commonwealth is again before state lawmakers, who are reportedly considering a range of plans that could substantially revise the congressional districts.

Observing Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Wayland Town Crier 10/21/11: Observing Domestic Violence Awareness Month. October in New England conjures a cornucopia of ripe colors, robust harvests, family feasts, and the anticipation of holiday cheer with family and friends. October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month, an opportunity to listen and learn about a scourge in our society that stays hidden due to ignorance and denial. For many of our friends and neighbors, home is the scariest place to be. There are no warm colors. Family feasts are frightening. There is no holiday cheer. Individuals and families living with abuse feel shame, isolation and fear. They accept as true that no one will believe them, and no one can help them.
