Wayland Town Crier 12/27/11: Attorney: Wayland selectmen letter violated Open Meeting Law. The article, referred to at the most recent selectmen meeting as both an “op-ed piece” and a “guest column,” was titled “Tax relief for Wayland”. A draft of the proposed text was emailed by Chairman Tom Fay to the other board members for review prior to their Nov. 28 meeting. Harris, a former Wayland selectman, says Fay and Selectman John Bladon, who wrote the draft, violated the Open Meeting Law by sharing opinions with a quorum of the board in a non-public forum.

From Wayland to Bhutan: A journey to ‘last Shangri-La’

Wayland Town Crier 12/26/11: From Wayland to Bhutan: A journey to 'last Shangri-La'. My parents moved to Wayland decades ago for the good school system and the reasonable work commute it would provide my dad into Cambridge each day. I no longer live in Wayland, though have settled into a peripatetic existence that includes regular visits there. My own commute is about as polar opposite to my dad’s as can be – it involves the Polar Route to Asia, usually with connections in Newark, Tokyo and Bangkok before I get to work. I work in Bhutan. Long commute, big carbon footprint, but exceptional job. Wayland education shares some of the claim for this. While a teenager, I discovered a cache of National Geographic magazines dating back to 1935 in our basement. Donated by my grandfather, who deemed them too valuable to throw away, they came to rest at our house. I read all of these, usually while waiting for my mom to call me for dinner. The articles about foreign countries and peoples most caught my attention. In my senior year at Wayland High, a course in anthropology defined what fascinated me – a world full of places where life is lived in a manner very different from that of my childhood. After college I immediately embarked on my journey to explore the world.

Avila is hoping to raise $4,000, with every dollar going to these two great organizations. Please visit his website (www.razoo.com/story/Alexisavila) to find out more about why Avila decided to do something challenging like run a marathon for the first time and how you can help (all donations are tax deductible).

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley announced a lawsuit on Wednesday against a Waltham driving school that allegedly closed its doors after collecting thousands of dollars in fees from students. According to the complaint, filed in Suffolk Superior Court, Lovely allegedly planned to close the school as early as October 2010. Despite the impending closure, Lovely allegedly continued to sign up hundreds of new students, accepting tuition payments through March. Wayland selectmen differ on Dudley Chateau proposal

Wayland Town Crier 12/20/11: Wayland selectmen differ on Dudley Chateau proposal. A divided Board of Selectmen has agreed to let the Dudley Chateau serve drinks on New Year’s Eve until 1 a.m. On a 3-2 vote, selectmen Monday gave owner Ken Phillips the go-ahead for the extended hours. Selectman John Bladon questioned the wisdom of extending the usual midnight closing since the Dudley Chateau is nearing the end of a three-year probationary period that was imposed following a huge brawl at the 20 Crest Road pub on the night of Dec. 27, 2008.

Wayland Patch 12/20/11: Selectmen OK Extra New Year’s Eve Hour for Dudley Chateau. Dudley Chateau received the OK from Wayland’s Board of Selectmen to remain open an extra hour, until 1 a.m., on New Year’s Eve. The Wayland Board of Selectmen voted 3-2 Monday night to grant the extension, but the vote did not come without much discussion and was, in fact, the second vote taken on the matter. The question of extending the hours for the restaurant and bar on Dudley Pond first came up at the selectmen’s Dec. 12 meeting when only selectmen Sue Pope, Tom Fay, Steve Correia and John Bladon were present. At that time, the vote to extend the hours split 2-2, with Pope and Correia voting for the extension and Fay and Bladon voting against it. Without majority support, the measure didn’t pass. At the Dec. 19 meeting, however, selectmen Joe Nolan was present and the issue arose again.

Wayland Student Press 12/14/11: New school presents opportunity to reevaluate traditions. Since the current high school was finished in 1960, Wayland High School students have had over 50 years to create traditions. With the move to the new school approaching, questions have arisen about what will happen to these traditions and how they might change. Bigger traditions such as Spirit Day, Winter Week and senior dress up day on Halloween will remain largely unaffected by the move, although they will face minor changes simply because of the design of the school. Some feel that these events are in need of changes anyway, and the new buildings will provide the opportunity.

Wayland Student Press 12/14/11: For better or worse, new school is going digital. In moving from the old school to the new, students and faculty will be adjusting to plenty of changes, not the least of which is advancements in technology. One of the goals in building the new school was to make it modern so it would be useful for years to come. Between the two computer labs, six media learning centers with computer carrels, a graphics lab and a video lab, there are many places for students and faculty to use technology.
