Candidate Statement

My name is Nan Jahnke and I am running for a seat on the Board of Library Trustees.

When I served on the library’s Long-Range Planning Committee three years ago, I came to see the library in a new way – not just as a place to get books and Internet access, but as a place of lifelong learning and community discussion, where all the residents of Wayland can go to revisit old ideas and think about new ones.

Go to the library any day of the week, and you will see what I mean. You’ll find children listening to stories, mothers exchanging parenting tips, young people borrowing museum passes, Cub Scouts attending a den meeting, and high school students researching First Amendment cases. You will find immigrants learning English, jobseekers honing new skills, homeowners learning how to grow a drought-tolerant lawn, our State Representative holding office hours, and retirees learning how to search an online database. And everywhere you look, you will find our tireless library staff answering questions and guiding everyone’s search for information.

This is what I love about the library. It serves everyone in town, it’s full of new ideas, it’s free, and it is the closest thing we have to a community center. I see it as one of the town’s greatest assets, and I would be honored to serve as one of its trustees.

I have lived in Wayland with my husband and three children for the last 13 years, and we have all been library patrons since our first week in town. I have served on the Library’s Long-Range Planning Committee, and I have leadership experience both in the schools and at my church. I am a reader by nature, and an editor by profession, and I have extensive experience with nonprofit organizations in the arts and education.

There are two three-year seats open on the Board of Library Trustees this year. These seats are uncontested; Sally Cartwright is running for one seat and I am running for the other. Please join us as we work to support the library in its mission to foster literacy, learning, and community life here in Wayland.

I welcome your questions (family@jahnke.org) and I hope you will vote for me on April 7.  In the meantime, I invite you to check out what’s happening at the Wayland Public Library (www.waylandlibrary.org).
