A viewing and discussion of the widely viewed film, “Race to Nowhere,” is scheduled for Wednesday, February 15, 2012, at 7 pm in the Wayland Town Building Large Hearing Room. This free event is designed for parents of preschool-age children and is co-sponsored by two Wayland Center early childhood programs. Registration is required through the following link: (http://rtnwaylandma2012.eventbrite.com/).

The Children’s Way Director Cheryl Fertig and Wayland Creative Preschool Director Susanne Geiger are hoping the viewing and discussion will stimulate dialogue about child-rearing issues. The film has been viewed around the world and is described in press materials as being “a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens.”

The film purports to reveal “the dark side of America’s achievement culture” and how it affects young children. It tells the stories of young people across the country who “have been pushed to the brink.” Explains Director Fertig: “After viewing the movie and talking with parents and teachers who had also seen it, it became clear that the only way we can avoid perpetuating 'the race to nowhere' is to start thinking and talking about these issues when children are very young and parents are first engaged in child rearing and quality of life decisions.” Dossie Kahn, Psy.D., of Wayland Youth and Family Services, will facilitate a discussion after the viewing.

Fertig said she and Director Geiger hope to “spur ongoing and rich conversations among preschool parents and educators that help them recognize the position they are in. We want them to be able to take hold of the exceptional opportunity they have, the opportunity to make choices early on that can have a positive and formative impact on children and the quality of family and community life. Parents of preschoolers are bombarded with information about child rearing and pressured by cultural norms that result in the overwhelming and disturbing daily realities that are depicted in this film,” Fertig added.

"We’re very excited to be partnering with Wayland Creative Preschool to raise awareness of these issues. We’re hoping this event will get the dialogue going and will get people thinking about what we can do that will make a difference.”

The band, which features tight harmonies backed up by strong instrumental work, will cover a variety of songs from the categories of Classic Rock, R&B, New Wave, Grunge, and Blues. A favorite in their home town of Wayland, the band has evolved over the past ten years of their existence, recently adding vocalist Gena Rider of Holliston and welcoming Tim Neves of Natick on harmonicas and vocals. Original members Charlie D'Ambrosio, Bob Lutz and Steve Robb were joined in 2008 by James Winokur. The band will donate all its tips to Guitars4Vets, an organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of ailing and injured military veterans by providing them with guitars and music instruction (guitars4vets.org). Music kicks off at 9PM.

Saturday, May 19 will be a big night for Wayland High School juniors – the night of the Junior Prom, where excitement is high and memories will be made that last a lifetime.
“Late Night” is a 16-year Wayland tradition. Every year since 1997, Wayland High School parents and local businesses have contributed to create a fun, alcohol and drug-free chaperoned party for the Wayland High School juniors to be together immediately afterthe Junior Prom.

All Wayland High School juniors are invited to this event, whether they attend the prom or not. The event is produced with no charge to students to make attendance as easy as possible for this memorable night of entertainment, refreshments, activities and prizes.

The Late Night committee is looking for volunteers – anyone interested should please contact Late Night 2012 Committee Chairs Deb Mead or Susan Longfritz. Tax-deductible donations are also welcome. Please send donations via check payable to Wayland PTO and send to JoAnn Leavitt, 9 Woodridge Road, Wayland MA 01778, or feel free to visit the Wayland PTO website to make an online donation.

An after-school program for Wayland Middle School students interested in cooking together and exploring French culture, music, and language is being offered once again for Grades 6, 7, and 8 students. The class – Passport to Paris and Beyond, An Exploration of Francophone Cuisine, Culture, and Language – debuted in the fall, and many of the students expressed interest in continuing. All new projects and recipes will be tried in the second round of classes set to begin Friday, March 2.

Held in the Wayland Middle School from 3:15 pm to 4:30 pm, the class is led by Wabe Yurek, who is on staff at Loker School and with the BASE program. Prior to joining the Wayland school district, he taught French toseventh and eighth graders at the Lincoln School in Brookline. He has also taught English in France and Guadeloupe to Grades 3-12 students. The fee for the six classes is $90. Dates are March 2 through April 13, and the class is offered through Community Education, Wayland School Community Programs. Fall students are welcome to return since the program will be different from the recently completed one. Through the program, children have a chance to learn about a culture through its food. Those already studying French can expand their knowledge while newcomers can explore a new language. Preparing food and dining together as they explore new and different recipes offers many socialization opportunities for the middle school student as well.

Tenor Luigi Boccia and pianist Arthur McManus will present a survey of the history of Italian song. The program includes songs by Baroque composers (Scarlatti, Giordini), works of 19th-century song composers (Tosti, Tirindelli), opera arias (Ponchielli, Cilea), songs by 20th-century opera composers (Puccini, Mascagni, Respighi, Leoncavallo), and selections from the rich history of Neapolitan song.

Luigi Boccia hails from Italy, where he studied Musicology at the University of Pavia before coming to the U.S. to begin his performing career with lead roles in Don Giovanni, Gianni Snicchi, The Merry Widow, The Barber of Seville, and others. Among other awards, Boccia was winner in the 2008 and 2009 Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation Competition and won First Prize in the 2008 Gerda Lissner Competition in New York. In 2010, he debuted at Carnegie Hall as tenor soloist in Mozart’s Coronation Mass and in Catania (Sicily) as Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata. He is currently a resident artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.

Arthur McManus has collaborated with numerous singers in the New York metropolitan area for over 20 years, serving as pianist for master classes conducted by such illustrious singers as Licia Albanese, Robert Merrill, and Martina Arroyo. He has been a collaborative pianist in the music department of Brandeis University, and currently is organist and music director at St. Joan of Arc Church in Orleans.

All Little Theater concerts are free and open to all; this one is made possible in part by a grant from the Wayland Cultural Council.

The final configuration of parking and pedestrian access will not be in place until the end of this summer, when demolition and landscaping will have been completed. For the remainder of this season, concert-goers can park in the High School’s student lot, the first lot they will encounter after entering the High School property. They will walk toward the new buildings, keeping the construction fence on their right. The Main Stage is in the new North building, which will be on the right. (Click on the HS image at the left for a larger view)

The TV give-away was the grand prize from the survey WayCAM conducted at Special Town Meeting, and that ran until the end of November. Town meeting attendees and many other town residents were invited to complete a survey about WayCAM’s performance and ways that WayCAM could improve its services to the Wayland community. Over 375 people participated, and the lucky winner of the TV was Ann Knight, who many of you know is Director of the Wayland Free Public Library. Ann’s name was randomly drawn at the WBA’s annual Holiday Party in December.

Ann is pictured here with Ken Isaacson, president of WayCAM (left), and Michael Abend, president of the Wayland Business Association. The presentation was made at WayCAM’s new studios, which are located, as of December 24th, on the new Wayland High School site, adjacent to the Field House. With the new site, WayCAM is much more than a TV station. WayCAM is transforming into a state-of-the-art Community Media Center, a resource for the whole town. A variety of courses in TV, video and studio production will be provided to the adult community, in addition to the classes presently provided by WayCAM to more than 100 Wayland students each year. WayCAM will be holding a community-wide Open House in Spring 2012, to introduce its new facilities and course offerings. Interested residents of all ages and backgrounds should contact Jim Mullane, Executive Director, at (508) 358-5006, email: jim@waycam.tv .

With a new season just a few short months away, WayCo Amateur Sports Development, Inc., – whose cornerstone program is the WayCo Softball League – announces its recent charitable donations. The non-profit organization donated a total of $2,250 in 2011 to eight different recipients.

A successful summer raffle and individual donations meant WayCo was able to top the previous three seasons in donations. Since its formation in 2008, WayCo has donated $6,275 to 12 different causes. Donations are made in honor of Daniel G. Burgess, one of four co-founders of the successful softball league. He passed away at age 20 in 2008, and the league is carried on in his memory.

Recipients in 2011 were: Daniel G. Burgess Memorial Scholarship at Good Shepherd Parish, the Wayland High School Football Program, Parmenter Food Pantry, Wayland Pop Warner Football, the Lauren Astley Memorial Fund, and the Wayland METCO Program. In addition, donations were also made to the Wayland High School Athletics Department and the James Griffin Family Fund.

Several of the donations were made with specific purposes identified. For example, the donation to the food pantry is used to purchase gift cards to a local grocery story; these are given to families during the holiday season. The high school athletic department was given money to help individual students needing anything from basketball shoes to hockey skates or to help with fees for camps or clinics. A donation to the METCO program was earmarked for families in need during the holidays. WayCo also chose to support the James Griffin Family Fund, which was established in support of late Wayland High School guidance counselor Jim Griffin, who was very special to so many of WayCo’s players.

WayCo’s Board of Directors is especially thankful to Olivia Hanlon, Wayland High School 2011, and Maeve Moynihan, a current senior, for volunteering their time to sell raffle tickets at several venues throughout the summer.

Wayland is going to have a year-long celebration—a 375th birthday bash—and we need your help to plan the party!

The 375th committee will host a year-long celebration for our town beginning in June 2013 and ending in June 2014. The committee will plan some major events and we invite all Wayland groups, organizations, and individuals to plan events for your own group or for the whole town related to the larger celebration. Some activities will be free while the cost of others will be paid by those attending the events.

With the celebration beginning in about 18 months, it is time to shift to a higher gear. Each of our meetings for the next few months will focus on a specific theme of the celebration. We invite anyone or any organization interested in that area to come to that meeting to share your ideas. We hope you will leave the meeting committed to carrying out an activity or event for the big celebration. All meetings are held in the Town Building at 7 pm.

February will focus on Wayland history, from Native Americans to present day. The Wayland Historical Society, the Historical Commission, and the Historic District Commission are natural groups to come to this meeting. But so are people interested in archeology, Veteran’s groups, historians, and writers. The date for this meeting is February 29th.

March will focus on children’s events. Our committee is already planning a big children’s event to culminate the celebration but we want to involve PTOs and other school groups, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, WCPA, and recreation groups to plan other events. The date for this meeting is March 28th.

April will focus on the arts, including music, dance, theater, visual arts, film, sculpture, and crafts. We invite groups and individuals interested in any of these art forms to come, including the Cultural Council, Vokes Players, the schools’ fine arts departments, the library, Arts Wayland, Little Theater Concerts, Sudbury Valley Nature Photographers, CAPA, New Horizon Band, local bands, filmmakers, artists, dancers, and individual artists and crafts people. There are so many talented people that we shouldn’t have any difficulty filling the calendar with a wide variety of cultural offerings. The date for this meeting is April 25th.

May will have an outdoor and environmental focus. We invite the recreation department, sports leagues, the Garden Club, conservation and environmental groups, the pool, Broomstone Curling Club, Dudley Pond Association, the Green Team, the River Stewardship Council, geocachers, SVT, and others to plan outdoor events that will remind us why we chose to live in a semi-rural community with lovely open spaces. The date for this meeting is May 23rd.

June will focus on public safety. Once we have a better idea of what events will be held, we will need to coordinate with our police and fire fighters. The date for this meeting is June 13th.

Clearly there is lots of overlap among these themes. Arts and children’s activities can take place out of doors as well as indoors; historical events can have an arts focus. You are welcome to come to as many meetings as you would like—and you or members of the 375th committee may help make connections among groups with similar interests.

There are groups we haven’t mentioned such as churches, political parties, and organizations we do not even know about. Please consider how you can add to the festivities. In the same way that our town would not be the same without committed volunteers, our celebration will not be as much fun, as educational, or as rich without your participation.

We are also looking for people interested helping with logistics, publicity, social media, and the events themselves. Think about the float your group, school, neighborhood, or business could have in our parade. Maybe you’d love to organize a flea market, or a talent show, or canoe races. This is a big party with room for lots of ideas. Come join the fun!

If you have questions or suggestions, please contact any member of our committee.

Journaling Your Way Through Grief: The grief process following the loss of a loved one is often described as a journey with many twists and turns. Writing about your journey can be a powerful tool for healing. It allows you to give voice to your grief, reflect on the ups and downs, and identify patterns that may trigger both pain and moments of peace. This 2 hour workshop is designed to facilitate the emotional healing process through journaling. There will be both didactic and experiential components to the program. All are welcome regardless of where you are in your grief journey. Materials provided. This Workshop is planned for Saturday, February 11from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m. To register or for more info, call Andrea Heinlein, LICSW at 508-358-3000, ex. 249.

Bereavement Group: Parmenter’s Hospice is offering an 8 week bereavement support group on Tuesdays from 7:00-8:30pm beginning February 28th. We recognize that everyone grieves in his or her own way, but no one needs to carry grief alone. This professionally facilitated group will provide an opportunity to learn about and share experiences of grieving in a relaxed and supportive environment. There is no fee to attend, but registration is required. Please mark your calendars: February 28, 2012 through April 17, 2012, 7:00-8:30pm For more information or to register for this support group, call Andrea Heinlein, LICSW at 508-358-3000.

HEARTplaysm: These Workshops gather children ages 3-12 after a death. Through conversation, visual expression, music, writing, and storytelling the children share their feelings and experiences. This creative process invites new understanding about death and life. There are some special workshops for children who have lost a mother, father or sibling. Group size is limited and early pre-registration is encouraged. Status will be confirmed by phone the Monday before the workshop. Registration is required. For more information and to register, please call Deborah at 508-358-3000 ext.244. Pre-School and Kindergarten, 9-9:45 am Grades 1 – 6, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm.

All programs will be held at the Parmenter offices which are located in Wayland at 266 Cochituate Road, Rt. 27.
