Wayland Patch 4/3/12: Incumbent Selectman Out, Incumbent Rec Commissioners In. Incumbent Sue Pope lost her bid for another term on the Wayland Board of Selectmen as former selectman Doug Leard and local lawyer Ed Collins earned the most votes and captured the two seats up for grabs.
Wayland Town Crier 4/4/12: Wayland residents vote out incumbent selectman. Voters yesterday ousted selectman and former state representative Susan Pope from the Board of Selectmen, choosing newcomers Doug Leard and Edward Collins. In a four-way race, Leard led the pack with 1,048 votes, followed by Collins with 931. Pope garnered 885 votes and Chris Brown received 782. Turnout was modest: 1,948 voters, or 21 percent of the town’s 9,008 registered voters, went to the polls.

Wayland Patch 4/3/12: Low Morning Turnout for Wayland Town Election. The 20 positions up for election in Wayland Tuesday were being decided by a very small percentage of voters as of about 11am.
Wayland Student Press Network 3/30/12: WSPN hosts debate for selectman candidates. Thursday, March 29, WSPN hosted a debate at Wayland High School for the selectman candidates. All four candidates, Chris Brown, Ed Collins, Douglas Leard and Susan Pope, participated.

Wayland Patch 3/28/12: Five Questions with Board of Selectmen Candidates. The April 3 Wayland Town Election will have Wayland voters electing 20 positions in town government. Only five positions up for grabs are contested and that includes two spots on the Wayland Board of Selectmen. Wayland Patch asked the four candidates for Board of Selectmen, Chris Brown, Edward Collins, Douglas Leard and Susan Pope to respond to five questions. All four candidates submitted answers.
Wayland Patch 3/28/12: Five Questions with Housing Authority Candidates. Wayland voters on April 3 will head to the polls to elect a number of positions in town, including several on the Wayland Housing Authority. Two women, Jacqueline Ducharme and Laurie Hojlo, are vying for a single, one-year term on the Wayland Housing Authority. Patch reached out to the two candidates with a set of five questions designed to help voters get to know the candidates better, and also to shed some light on the candidates' views of the position for which they are running. Wayland Patch 3/25/12: Candidates' Night Part 3: Recreation Commission. Two newcomers and two incumbents addressed the audience and answered questions Thursday night during the Recreation Commission segment of Wayland’s 62nd Annual Candidates’ Night. Stas Gayshan and Thurston “Brud” Wright are the incumbents, while Mark Lucier and Gary Carvalho are running as challengers. The questions Thursday night ranged from relinquishing recreation land for affordable housing to the benefits and drawbacks of artificial turf.
Wayland Patch 3/24/12: Candidates’ Night Part 2: Board of Selectmen. Four Wayland residents are vying for two spots up for grabs on the town’s Board of Selectmen when voters go to the polls for the Town Election on April 3. Thursday night, the four candidates took to the stage in the Large Hearing Room of the Wayland Town Building for the 62nd Annual Candidates’ Night, sponsored by the Wayland League of Women Voters. Chris Brown, Doug Leard, Ed Collins and incumbent Sue Pope offered opening statements before responding to a wide variety of questions from the audience and LWV members, several of which focused on taxes.
Wayland Patch 3/23/12: Candidates’ Night Part 1: Housing Authority. The Housing Authority candidates took the stage first. Jacqueline Ducharme and Laurie Hojlo are vying for a single, one-year term on the board, while Mary Antes and Kevin Goodwin are running uncontested for a five-year term and a two-year term respectively. Ducharme said she would like to see Wayland maintain its semi-rural character while meeting the affordable housing needs of residents as well as the state's requirements. “I believe the town needs to have an updated, comprehensive affordable housing plan,” Ducharme said, adding that she’d like to see many options when it comes to affordable housing. Hojlo pointed out that while many Wayland residents live comfortably in homes they can afford, that isn’t the case for everyone. “Not everyone in Wayland lives in such optimal conditions,” Hojlo said. “I would love to be able to assist … in finding healthy housing options for residents who already live in town.”
A debate for the Wayland selectmen candidates will be held in the Wayland High School theater on Thursday, March 29 at 7:30pm. The League of Women Voters Annual Candidates Night will be held on March 22. The program will begin at 7:15pm with light refreshments, and the candidates will take the stage beginning at 7:30pm.

The following residents returned nomination papers on Tuesday to run for office in the annual Town Election on Tuesday, April 3. They will appear on the Town Election ballot unless they withdraw their nomination papers by Feb. 28. Positions in bold note a contested race.
Wayland Patch 4/5/11: Incumbents All But Carry the Elections in Wayland. The blustery and unpredictable weather didn't stop Wayland residents from showing up to cast their votes in Tuesday’s town election. And most of those voters put their support behind the incumbents. Two of the three seats open on the School Committee went to incumbent candidates and both open seats on the Board of Selectmen went to candidates seeking re-election.
Wayland Town Crier 4/6/11: School Committee chairman out in Wayland. Ellen Grieco was the only challenger to win a town office yesterday, defeating School Committee Chairman Louis Jurist by 80 votes. Grieco had 1,203 votes to Jurist's to 1,123 to win a one-year seat on the board. "I'm thrilled," Grieco said. "I'm very excited, and I'm looking forward to putting my best effort forward for the Wayland schools." School Committee members Barbara Fletcher and Beth Butler won re-election, receiving 1,274 and 1,411 votes, respectively. They defeated challenger Alexia Obar, who had 1,156 votes. Selectmen Steve Correia and Joseph Nolan also kept their seats.

Wayland Town Crier 5/12/10: Kinney and Bladon win in close races at Town Election. Wayland’s local election brought out close races on Tuesday, with Shawn Kinney winning the open School Committee seat by just 50 votes over Beth Butler. In the race for the open seat on the Board of Selectmen, John Bladon defeated Don Bustin by a vote of 1,320 to 1,161.

MetroWest Daily News 5/5/10: Candidates debate for Scott Brown's Senate seat . In the only debate before the May 11 special election, state Senate hopefuls Peter Smulowitz and Richard Ross last night squared off on the economy, health care and job growth. At the event, moderated by Town Clerk Gail Bernardo, each candidate offered opening statements to a large audience at King Philip Middle School before diving into the hot-button issues. Voters will hit the booths next Tuesday to fill Scott Brown's seat in the state Senate. The district includes Wayland, Millis, Sherborn, Needham, Wrentham, Norfolk, Plainville and North Attleborough as well as parts of Natick, Franklin, Wellesley and Attleboro.
