Metrowest Daily News 1/29/11: At Wayland club, they're taking a shot at pickleball. Let the record show Joe Bausk and Dick Gellis are the pioneers who brought the sport of pickleball to MetroWest and maybe to the entire Bay State. The program coordinator at the Longfellow Club in Wayland, Gellis has been braving blizzards and soggy socks on Friday mornings to teach the game's rudiments to a handful of enthusiastic adult learners on the kid-sized courts of the Zip Zone. Played on a badminton-sized court and named after its co-inventor's cocker spaniel Pickles who liked to grab loose balls with its teeth, pickleball combines elements of pingpong and platform tennis.

Boston Globe 6/3/10: Wayland Pascual-Leone taps into American, Spanish soccer worlds. Nico Pascual-Leone is the product of two worlds, one American, one Spanish. He is fluent in the languages, has attended schools in both the United States and Spain, and has absorbed both cultures. On the soccer pitch, the Wayland High junior is a hybrid. An attacking midfielder, the 5-foot-10 Pascual-Leone is quick enough to play the faster American game, yet he has the technical skill of a player who grew up playing pickup matches on tiny concrete courts in Spain. With the 16-year-old spearheading the attack, supplying a team-leading six goals, the Warriors got off to a blistering 5-1-1 start this fall, and last week were just two victories shy of matching last year’s win total.

Various other volunteer coaches helped out when they could. But Mauer and his teammates had the will to compete during that first season of Wayland-Weston crew. He and a core group of his teammates would stay with crew for all four years of high school, giving the program important continuity in its early years.

Boston Globe 3/25/10: Vote looms on Mass. realignment of high school football leagues, playoffs. In most years over the last two decades, either Acton-Boxborough or Lincoln-Sudbury has represented the league in the postseason playoffs (Westford Academy was the champion in 2005 and last fall, while Wayland High won back-to-back crowns in 2006 and 2007). Even if a playoff berth is not on the line, Lopez appreciates the competition, the only yearly matchup in the state featuring two high school football coaches with 200-plus career wins. However, the yearly showdown would be one of the casualties if a proposal to revamp the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association’s statewide football playoff system is approved by high school principals tomorrow. The proposal, spearheaded by Plymouth North High athletic director Bill Burkhead, calls for replacing longstanding leagues with six statewide divisions based on enrollment, and divided into four geographic regions. Under the plan, Acton-Boxborough would play in Division 1 North, while Lincoln-Sudbury is slated for Division 2 North. Under the proposal, 50 percent of the teams would qualify for the playoffs, which would lead to statewide champions in each division. The postseason would kick off the first week of November, and would not extend beyond the first Saturday in December, the Super Bowl date now in effect. However, traditional Thanksgiving Day rivalries would be retained.

Tufts Daily 3/18/10: Diving | Unlikely pair of Jumbo divers heads to nationals. (Includes video) Gardel grew up in Wayland, Mass., where she also was a youth gymnast. When Gardel’s hometown gym closed down during her seventh-grade year, she and her identical twin sister Melissa tried many sports before settling on diving during freshman year of high school. Gymnastics is the Gardel twins’ first love (Lindsay still maintains that if she could give up diving today for gymnastics, she would), but diving, with its focus on acrobatic motion, proved to be a worthy substitute. “Melissa and I were very hyperactive kids, and when we quit [gymnastics], we tried soccer, track, pole vaulting,” Linday Gardel said. “Our high school didn’t have gymnastics, but we had a friend on the diving team, and he basically dared us to come to practice. So we did, and it was the closest we could get to gymnastics.” The sisters spent their childhood doing all kinds of activities together, including a five-summer stint in a local circus troupe, where the duo’s “adagio” routine — one of the twins would lift up the other, who would engage in an array of acrobatic endeavors — dazzled audiences.

Boston Globe 2/28/10: Coach guides Wayland swimmers to win boys’ and girls’ championships, twice. It’s not that the father wished to put undue pressure on his son. It was just a subtle reminder. OK, maybe not so subtle. Last year, Mike Foley guided the Wayland High boys’ swim team to the Division 2 state title. He coaches the girls’ team too. The girls’ meet was the next day. In between meets, Foley said, “my father pointed out that nobody had ever won the boys’ and girls’ titles in the same year.’’ The girls matched the boys’ title, and Mike Foley stood alone. His dad knew a thing or two about championships. In 35 years as the swim coach at archrival Weston High, Pete Foley won 18 state titles. His son, now with seven, is chipping away. But Pete never won a state crown with the boys’ and girls’ teams in the same year. It gets better. Last weekend, at Harvard, both of his teams repeated as state champs. “I’m still in shock,’’ said Foley.

Wayland Town Crier 2/22/10: Make that five years in a row for girls swimming and diving. Last year the Wayland girls swimming and diving team graduated the first class to win four years in a row, a group of six seniors that many teams figured were the reason why the Warriors had so much success. Senior captain Emily Wright understood the pressure. "There was a little pressure going into this meet. We (graduated) a lot of seniors last year who scored a lot of points for us, but we knew this going into it. We trained long and hard for this and were ready for the challenge," Wright said. After graduating all of the first state champ team members from 2006, Wayland proved its ongoing strength and enthusiasm on Sunday when the Warriors won for the fifth year in a row, a feat that few can ever own.

Wayland (154 points) held off Dual County League rival Weston (141) and Bishop Feehan (131). Although Weston was close the entire meet, Wayland wins in the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay helped it maintain the lead. Wayland placed first in two other events, the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke. Weston defeated Wayland twice this season – once during a dual meet and again during a DCL meet.
