The Wayland Historical Commission is sponsoring its 11th annual volunteer Spring brush clearing weekend at the Wayland Depot (1 Cochituate Rd.) on Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday May 6 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers are encouraged to come either day to help remove brush, vines and undergrowth along the inactive railroad tracks near Wayland Depot and through Wayland. We will also continue to excavate the steam locomotive turntable pit to expose more of the circular granite walls, in addition to removing brush that has grown up along the tracks and the enginehouse site. Volunteers should bring work gloves and pruning tools, shovels, and should wear work clothes and boots. In cooperation with Friends of the Wayland Rail Trail we will be clearing brush along the entire railroad line through Wayland.

For more information call Rick Conard at (508) 358-4597 after 7 p.m. or by E-mail at RRConard@earthlink.net.

When Ms. Washek was diagnosed with cancer in 2002, she was thrust into a cycle of daily radiation treatments. Cooking meals and getting her three daughters where they needed to go were suddenly much tougher tasks. But Washek says neighbors and friends immediately stepped forward and took care of meals every day for her children and organized rides to get them where they needed to go. Her friend, Jean Seidon, was also going through cancer treatment and experiencing a similar outpouring of support. Together Washek and Ms. Seidon were inspired to create the Wayland Angel Food Network, an organization helping families who had suddenly been thrown into a crisis and needed help with everyday tasks.

While at the CADCA (Community Anti Drug Coalitions of America) Conference this week with new Youth Officer Shane Bowles, there were over a hundred and fifty students in attendance who will participate in CADCA's Youth Leadership Initiative this week and then return home to become "change agents" in their community. WaylandCares has a group of "change agents," students that have been instrumental in changing the course of WaylandCares since they attended the CADCA conference in Pheonix Arizona in 2010, and they have been joined by students who attended the Youth to Youth Conference in the summer of 2011. Together they have worked hard on substance-free events like STOMP, 5th Quarter, Open Mic Night, and the very WAYGLO dance. If you are currently a Wayland High student or an 8th grader at Wayland Middle School you can become a "change agent" at WaylandCares. WaylandCares also provides volunteer opportunities for adults interested in becoming "change agents" helping to promote healthy youth decision making. Check their webpage for more information.

Wayland is going to have a year-long celebration—a 375th birthday bash—and we need your help to plan the party!

The 375th committee will host a year-long celebration for our town beginning in June 2013 and ending in June 2014. The committee will plan some major events and we invite all Wayland groups, organizations, and individuals to plan events for your own group or for the whole town related to the larger celebration. Some activities will be free while the cost of others will be paid by those attending the events.

With the celebration beginning in about 18 months, it is time to shift to a higher gear. Each of our meetings for the next few months will focus on a specific theme of the celebration. We invite anyone or any organization interested in that area to come to that meeting to share your ideas. We hope you will leave the meeting committed to carrying out an activity or event for the big celebration. All meetings are held in the Town Building at 7 pm.

February will focus on Wayland history, from Native Americans to present day. The Wayland Historical Society, the Historical Commission, and the Historic District Commission are natural groups to come to this meeting. But so are people interested in archeology, Veteran’s groups, historians, and writers. The date for this meeting is February 29th.

March will focus on children’s events. Our committee is already planning a big children’s event to culminate the celebration but we want to involve PTOs and other school groups, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, WCPA, and recreation groups to plan other events. The date for this meeting is March 28th.

April will focus on the arts, including music, dance, theater, visual arts, film, sculpture, and crafts. We invite groups and individuals interested in any of these art forms to come, including the Cultural Council, Vokes Players, the schools’ fine arts departments, the library, Arts Wayland, Little Theater Concerts, Sudbury Valley Nature Photographers, CAPA, New Horizon Band, local bands, filmmakers, artists, dancers, and individual artists and crafts people. There are so many talented people that we shouldn’t have any difficulty filling the calendar with a wide variety of cultural offerings. The date for this meeting is April 25th.

May will have an outdoor and environmental focus. We invite the recreation department, sports leagues, the Garden Club, conservation and environmental groups, the pool, Broomstone Curling Club, Dudley Pond Association, the Green Team, the River Stewardship Council, geocachers, SVT, and others to plan outdoor events that will remind us why we chose to live in a semi-rural community with lovely open spaces. The date for this meeting is May 23rd.

June will focus on public safety. Once we have a better idea of what events will be held, we will need to coordinate with our police and fire fighters. The date for this meeting is June 13th.

Clearly there is lots of overlap among these themes. Arts and children’s activities can take place out of doors as well as indoors; historical events can have an arts focus. You are welcome to come to as many meetings as you would like—and you or members of the 375th committee may help make connections among groups with similar interests.

There are groups we haven’t mentioned such as churches, political parties, and organizations we do not even know about. Please consider how you can add to the festivities. In the same way that our town would not be the same without committed volunteers, our celebration will not be as much fun, as educational, or as rich without your participation.

We are also looking for people interested helping with logistics, publicity, social media, and the events themselves. Think about the float your group, school, neighborhood, or business could have in our parade. Maybe you’d love to organize a flea market, or a talent show, or canoe races. This is a big party with room for lots of ideas. Come join the fun!

If you have questions or suggestions, please contact any member of our committee.

Have you ever thought about tutoring someone in English? Most people who decide to become tutors are thinking of the good it can do, helping others become more proficient in English and better able to cope with employment, landlords, schools or the medical profession. But then they discover the rewards, the satisfaction that comes as progress is made and a relationship develops that enriches both learner and tutor. Tutors often speak of their pleasure in learning about another culture and their greater appreciation for the challenges facing those who are adapting to ours.

Because of the constant demand for tutoring, all available tutors are now working with students, and the next tutor-training course has been scheduled. Program director Ginny Steel is currently enrolling prospective tutors for the five-session course that starts on February 29. The class will meet in the Raytheon Room at the Wayland Library on five consecutive Wednesday mornings, from 9:30 – 12:30. No prior knowledge of a foreign language is needed, just an openness to other cultures and the desire to share your knowledge of English. The training is free, although it is necessary to purchase a textbook for about $20.

For more information or to enroll in the tutor-training course, you can phone Ginny Steel at 508-358-7517 or email her at virginia@thesteels.com.

The Wayland Council on Aging is in need of drivers for their Meals on Wheels program. All that’s needed is a commitment of 1.5 to 2 hours per week, a valid driver’s license, and a desire to make a difference in the life of a homebound senior. Drivers can sign up to drive weekly or every other week (you can share the position with a friend!). This can be a perfect position for a stay-at-home parent; drivers can have their children join them during vacation, or opt not to drive during school vacations. Interested? Call or email Maureen DeJong, Volunteer Coordinator, at 508-358-2990.
