Wayland is going to have a year-long celebration—a 375th birthday bash—and we need your help to plan the party!

The 375th committee will host a year-long celebration for our town beginning in June 2013 and ending in June 2014. The committee will plan some major events and we invite all Wayland groups, organizations, and individuals to plan events for your own group or for the whole town related to the larger celebration. Some activities will be free while the cost of others will be paid by those attending the events.

With the celebration beginning in about 18 months, it is time to shift to a higher gear. Each of our meetings for the next few months will focus on a specific theme of the celebration. We invite anyone or any organization interested in that area to come to that meeting to share your ideas. We hope you will leave the meeting committed to carrying out an activity or event for the big celebration. All meetings are held in the Town Building at 7 pm.

February will focus on Wayland history, from Native Americans to present day. The Wayland Historical Society, the Historical Commission, and the Historic District Commission are natural groups to come to this meeting. But so are people interested in archeology, Veteran’s groups, historians, and writers. The date for this meeting is February 29th.

March will focus on children’s events. Our committee is already planning a big children’s event to culminate the celebration but we want to involve PTOs and other school groups, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, WCPA, and recreation groups to plan other events. The date for this meeting is March 28th.

April will focus on the arts, including music, dance, theater, visual arts, film, sculpture, and crafts. We invite groups and individuals interested in any of these art forms to come, including the Cultural Council, Vokes Players, the schools’ fine arts departments, the library, Arts Wayland, Little Theater Concerts, Sudbury Valley Nature Photographers, CAPA, New Horizon Band, local bands, filmmakers, artists, dancers, and individual artists and crafts people. There are so many talented people that we shouldn’t have any difficulty filling the calendar with a wide variety of cultural offerings. The date for this meeting is April 25th.

May will have an outdoor and environmental focus. We invite the recreation department, sports leagues, the Garden Club, conservation and environmental groups, the pool, Broomstone Curling Club, Dudley Pond Association, the Green Team, the River Stewardship Council, geocachers, SVT, and others to plan outdoor events that will remind us why we chose to live in a semi-rural community with lovely open spaces. The date for this meeting is May 23rd.

June will focus on public safety. Once we have a better idea of what events will be held, we will need to coordinate with our police and fire fighters. The date for this meeting is June 13th.

Clearly there is lots of overlap among these themes. Arts and children’s activities can take place out of doors as well as indoors; historical events can have an arts focus. You are welcome to come to as many meetings as you would like—and you or members of the 375th committee may help make connections among groups with similar interests.

There are groups we haven’t mentioned such as churches, political parties, and organizations we do not even know about. Please consider how you can add to the festivities. In the same way that our town would not be the same without committed volunteers, our celebration will not be as much fun, as educational, or as rich without your participation.

We are also looking for people interested helping with logistics, publicity, social media, and the events themselves. Think about the float your group, school, neighborhood, or business could have in our parade. Maybe you’d love to organize a flea market, or a talent show, or canoe races. This is a big party with room for lots of ideas. Come join the fun!

If you have questions or suggestions, please contact any member of our committee.

Have you ever thought about tutoring someone in English? Most people who decide to become tutors are thinking of the good it can do, helping others become more proficient in English and better able to cope with employment, landlords, schools or the medical profession. But then they discover the rewards, the satisfaction that comes as progress is made and a relationship develops that enriches both learner and tutor. Tutors often speak of their pleasure in learning about another culture and their greater appreciation for the challenges facing those who are adapting to ours.

Because of the constant demand for tutoring, all available tutors are now working with students, and the next tutor-training course has been scheduled. Program director Ginny Steel is currently enrolling prospective tutors for the five-session course that starts on February 29. The class will meet in the Raytheon Room at the Wayland Library on five consecutive Wednesday mornings, from 9:30 – 12:30. No prior knowledge of a foreign language is needed, just an openness to other cultures and the desire to share your knowledge of English. The training is free, although it is necessary to purchase a textbook for about $20.

For more information or to enroll in the tutor-training course, you can phone Ginny Steel at 508-358-7517 or email her at virginia@thesteels.com.

The Wayland Council on Aging is in need of drivers for their Meals on Wheels program. All that’s needed is a commitment of 1.5 to 2 hours per week, a valid driver’s license, and a desire to make a difference in the life of a homebound senior. Drivers can sign up to drive weekly or every other week (you can share the position with a friend!). This can be a perfect position for a stay-at-home parent; drivers can have their children join them during vacation, or opt not to drive during school vacations. Interested? Call or email Maureen DeJong, Volunteer Coordinator, at 508-358-2990.

No, it isn’t a countdown or the length of a fabulous vacation, it’s the combined number of hours donated this summer by about 15 Wayland High School students who spent their time away from school doing everything from grooming horses at Pond Hollow Farm, to moving books at the Wayland Town Building, to plucking tomato worms off plants in the area community gardens. The students took part in a summer community service program designed to help them meet their required community service hours for junior and senior privileges at Wayland High School, and, if coordinator Amy Schoeff had anything to say about it, create lifelong volunteers in the process. “My goal is to get the kids to look at community service not just as something they need to get done,” said Schoeff, who works as a school nurse at WHS. “[I want them] to realize they have something to give.”

Specifically, Habitat is seeking Wayland residents for three committees – outreach, design and construction oversight, and fundraising and development.

Wayland High School Community Service volunteers Kate Fiske and Jesse Vogel were out on Heard Pond in Wayland, hand-pulling the water chestnut plants that have infested the pond for a number of years. In 2003, there were 1.2 million pounds of the weed harvested from the pond, and in 2010 just 427 pounds. Success depends on just about 100 percent removal of the plant for each growing season for a number of years, since the seeds lie in dormancy in the pond sediments for up to 12 years. Because the plants are much fewer than just a few years ago, this type of hand-pulling effort requires a trudge through quite an area of mucky bottom and lily pads to find the occasional water chestnut plant.

Wayland Town Crier 6/26/11: Volunteers needed to help clear Heard Pond in Wayland. The Wayland Surface Water Quality Committee just started the 2011 season of harvesting water chestnuts on Heard Pond in Wayland.

Water chestnuts are an invasive species that just a few years ago completely covered many parts of the pond from shoreline to shoreline. In 2003, there were 1.2 million pounds of the weed harvested, and in 2010 just 427 pounds of plants. This dramatic decrease cannot be taken for granted, since water chestnut seeds may have a seven- to 12-year dormancy in the sediment, and complete eradication for a number of harvesting seasons is required to bring the infestation under control.

Lycott Environmental employees Travis Williams and Jake Duncan were out on the pond recently, harvesting the very difficult to reach southwest shoreline.

The town of Wayland has contracted out this type of work, while a Surface Water Quality Committee volunteer effort will remove the weeds in the easier to wade portions of the pond along Pelham Island Road.

Please email Tom Largy, the project manager for Heard Pond or call him at 508-358-4646 if you would like to volunteer or just discuss invasive aquatic weeds in general, since Largy has literally seen millions of them in recent years.

Wayland’s Board of Public Works invites public comment on the proposed Wellhead Protection Plan on Monday, July 25, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Town Building. The draft Wellhead Protection Plan, which is on the DPW page of the Wayland town website (www.wayland.ma.us/Pages/WaylandMA_DPW), identifies potential sources of contaminants in our drinking water supply, prioritizes the risks to the water supply, and provides strategies to mitigate or eliminate those risks. The Wellhead Protection Plan was the culmination of much hard work by the Wellhead Protection Committee and was prepared with the assistance of the Mass Rural Water Association. The Wellhead Protection Plan is part of the town’s continuing efforts to protect all sources of drinking water and to ensure a safe and reliable water supply for all residents.

In related news, the Board of Public Works at its meeting on June 20, 2011, voted to dissolve the Wellhead Protection Committee and establish a new Wellhead Protection Advisory Committee in view of the evolving roles and responsibilities related to wellhead protection efforts. The newly formed advisory committee will develop and make recommendations on strategies necessary to protect our water supply and encourage community involvement on water resource protection issues through public outreach and education. The Wellhead Protection Advisory Committee will report to the Board of Public Works and make recommendations on wellhead protection issues. The advisory committee will be comprised of five members appointed by the Board of Public Works for staggered three-year terms. Any interested residents are encouraged to submit letters of interest to Jon Mishara, Chair of the Board of Public Works, at jmishara@comcast.net on or before July 15, 2011.
