Wayland Patch 4/1/11: Saving Wayland's Turtles One Fence at a Time. Driving along Route 27 between Water Row and River Road, you’ve probably become accustomed to the undeveloped, slightly wild look of the landscape. Were you surprised to see a fence going up last weekend? As it turns out, the fence is not an effort to domesticate the wildlife living in the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, but is rather an effort to help keep it alive.

Wayland Town Crier 1/10/11: Volunteers cling to hope for Haiti. As he drove through the capital of his native Haiti in May, Whitinsville resident Marc Booz noticed a brick wall scrawled with simple red graffiti: "We are tired." "It basically summarized the country," he said, translating the message from Creole. One year ago Wednesday, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near Port-au-Prince, killing an estimated 250,000 people, injuring many more and displacing a million and a half residents in a struggling country already ranked as the Western hemisphere's poorest. As the first anniversary of the tragedy approaches, removal of the rubble – enough to fill a line of shipping containers from New York City to Las Vegas – has only recently begun, starting downtown. "Progress there is very slow," said Joe Sapienza, the pastor of Celebration International Church in Wayland and director of Bread of Compassion, a town nonprofit that sends volunteer construction and medical teams to Haiti. "You step around a corner and see these villages of 500 people, a 1,000 people. And they all live under tents."

Wayland Town Crier 11/10/10: Neighbor Brigade to the rescue!. With the season for giving thanks and giving gifts fast upon us, it might be a good time to think of ways to give – and receive – blessings of time, caring and compassion. One locally grown organization, Neighbor Brigade, offers opportunities for both. Neighbor Brigade dates back to 2002 when friends of Wayland resident Jean Seiden, who was being treated for breast cancer, set up a meal chain and delivered food to her home on a regular basis. Not long after, Pam Washek, who also lived in Wayland, learned she had a tumor in her shoulder, and Seiden offered to set up a similar food chain for her family. "I was so touched by this gesture," Washek recalled recently. "We had a hot dinner delivered three times a week for six months. Both Jean and I felt that we were blessed to have had such support and thought it would be great if there was this kind of assistance available for everyone who needed it." Unfortunately, Seiden lost her battle four years ago at the age of 48. But the spirit between her and Washek still flourishes in Wayland Neighbor Brigade (formerly Wayland Angels), an organization the two women established to mobilize neighborhood volunteers to help people in their town during times of crisis. Since the group delivered its first meal in February 2003, it has grown to more than 1,500 volunteers and expanded to 13 MetroWest towns. They serve families burdened with such issues as sudden illness or tragedy. They deliver meals, drive people to and from local appointments, run household errands, help children with homework, and offer a friendly hand where needed.

Boston Globe 6/13/10: Neighbor brigade. In 2002, Pam Washek and Jean Seiden of Wayland were both diagnosed with cancer in 2002. Washek was lucky to only have the support of Seiden, but also the assistance of other friends, family, and community members who drove her daughters — ages 4, 10, and 12 — to school, soccer, and Girl Scouts, and delivered meals according to a schedule organized by Seiden. After her treatment ended in 2003, Washek decided to help others who didn’t have such luxuries. With the support of Seiden, whose cancer would return and take her life in 2006, Washek established the Wayland Angels Food Network to provide an easily duplicated meal chain model benefiting families in temporary crisis due to illness or injury. The organization, which was recently renamed Neighbor Brigade after attaining nonprofit status, continues to recruit chapter leaders throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Wayland Town Crier 1/19/10: Local volunteers struggle to get to Haiti. Cramming their checked luggage allotment exclusively with much-needed medical supplies for Haiti, a 10-member aid team for Wayland-based Bread of Compassion is waiting to see whether they will actually get off the ground. The earthquake shattered the control tower for the island nation's main runway a week ago. While American military officers now in charge say capacity has been expanded, flights from other countries and relief groups have been rerouted to neighboring Dominican Republic. And though American Airlines said yesterday it has permission to reopen commercial flights to the devastated capital yesterday, for Bread of Compassion volunteers and the day's other confirmed passengers, that date has been pushed back several times. "It's up in the air," said organization founder and team leader Joe Sapienza, the pastor of Celebration International Church in Wayland. "We'll be on standby."
