Candidate Statement:

My name is Jon Mishara and I am running for the Board of Public Works.  Although this is my first campaign for public office, my demonstrated commitment to public service and my understanding of the challenges facing this community make me a strong candidate.   As an experienced attorney and a 15 year resident of Wayland along with my wife and two daughters, I will be a strong advocate for the residents of Wayland and will bring a fresh perspective to the challenges facing this community.

The challenges confronting the Department of Public Works where I can make a difference:

  • Maximizing efficiencies and cost savings with the newly formed DPW based on the consolidation of the Highway, Parks, Water and Landfill operations.
  • Preserving and improving the town’s infrastructure, including water mains, roadway paving, traffic flow and design, and landfill operations.
  • Prioritizing capital spending so that funds are spent based on the town’s greatest needs.
  • Ensuring that the Board of Public Works is accountable to the public and operates transparently to Wayland residents.
  • Collaborating with other departments and boards to more efficiently allocate resources.
  • Addressing dwindling state aid and reduced tax revenues which are forcing us to re-think how to preserve town services in a fiscally responsible manner.

As a practicing attorney for 22 years, I have worked in both the public and private sectors.  I am currently counsel for a global insurance, engineering and risk management company which promotes sustainable building practices by large companies and governmental entities to reduce their impact on natural resources and the environment.  Previously, as a prosecutor in Massachusetts, I led several environmental enforcement actions against private polluters and spearheaded successful prosecutions against public officials involving conflicts of interest, kickbacks, and embezzlement, resulting in lengthy prison sentences.

I promise to bring an innovative and hands-on approach to the newly formed Board of Public Works and will be an effective and responsible voice for the people of Wayland.  I welcome any comments or questions.  Thank you for your support.
