The Wayland Business Association (WBA) supports several town organizations each year – but none this year is doing more service than the Wayland Charitable Committee. During the current recession, many more residents are living on the edge financially and need a little help with food, rent, heat and even auto repairs to keep their families afloat.

This significant community need was presented to the WBA Executive Committee for a grant, and it was met with a donation of $1,500. The check was presented recently at a meeting of the four members appointed to the Charitable Committee by the town’s Commissioner of Trust Funds.

The Wayland Charitable Committee provides short-term financial assistance to Wayland residents. This assistance is given in a manner that respects integrity, independence and dignity of recipients. The committee’s work is funded entirely through private funds and donations (not taxes).

Residents needing short-term, emergency financial assistance call the committee’s message line (508-358-3624). Messages are monitored, and a committee member contacts applicants with the aim of providing rapid, timely help. Of course, all names and information are kept confidential.

The committee assists people who have lived in Wayland for at least one year. Payments are made directly to vendors and/or suppliers of services as needed. Grocery vouchers also are provided.

Help is available for utilities, medicine, food, rent, clothing, medical service, special dietary needs, and special transportation.

The Wayland Charitable Committee was formed in 1997 with a gift from Suzanne M. A. Leavitt, a long-time Wayland resident. Private donations are encouraged to help continue the assistance. To assist the Charitable Committee during this particularly difficult year, send your check, payable to the Wayland Charitable Committee, to the Commissioner of Trusts, Wayland Town Building. All contributions are tax deductible.

Wayland Charitable Committee members (from left) Suzanne Morgan, Marilyn Turnbull, and Heather Pineault accept a $1,500 check from Wayland Business Association Co-President Dave D’Orlando. Not available for the photo was Lynn Dowd and Michael Patterson.

Background

The WBA’s fundraising activities and dues are used to support local organizations. The High School Scholarship Fund traditionally has been the primary focus. Last year, the WBA donated more than $8,000 to Wayland community organizations and expects to match that level this year. The WBA urges any group in town that needs funding for special projects to apply early for a grant. The application is available at their Web site: www.waylandbusinessassociation.org The WBA was formed more than 30 years ago based on a mission of community support. In 2009, the Wayland Business Association grew to 99 members, and supported several community organizations with grants. For more information email info@waylandbusinessassociation.org or call any of the officers shown on the Web site: www.waylandbusinessassociation.org.

The following was submitted by Town Administrator Fred Turkington:

The next meeting of the Board of Selectmen will be held on Monday, March 15 in Town Building. After convening the meeting, selectmen will pause to recognize Marcy Crowley for 40 years of service to Wayland and to the metropolitan region. Although Marcy has relocated to Vermont to be near family and will be unable to join us, former colleagues from the regional environmental and transportation planning organizations on which she represented Wayland and other MetroWest suburbs will join Town officials and citizens to hear the reading of a certificate of recognition. We hope Marcy will follow the proceedings through WayCAM and momentos from the evening will be sent to her.

Following the recognition ceremony, members of the Surface Water Quality Committee will update the selectmen on a grant application to be filed seeking funding to conduct a nitrogen study of Dudley Pond.

At approximately 7:45 p.m., as part of the Board's efforts to meet with impacted boards and committees on Annual Town Meeting Warrant articles, selectmen will meet with petitioners and members of the Housing Authority and Housing Partnership to discuss several articles related to affordable housing – two articles would create trusts to construct or purchase housing, one article would require the town to prepare an affordable housing master plan, and another would authorize the town to sell a parcel of land on Stonebridge Road to Habitat for Humanity to construct three, 3-bedroom housing units.

After reviewing correspondence, considering the consent calendar, and discussing projected meeting agenda items for the next several meetings, the Board will consider designating a member to serve on a temporary committee monitoring the development of a recreation facility master plan.

The meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Selectmen's Meeting Room.

Sledding at Claypit Hill School in the middle of summer… a Pirate Cruise sailing out of Plymouth Harbor…a road trip to the Pawtucket Red Sox…an Ancient Egyptian Adventure? It’s all happening at Pegasus this summer, which will be located at Claypit Hill School. The calendar of events is filling quickly with enrichment activities, field trips, and special on-site events.

Here are the latest programming updates:

Swimming at Regis College. Children enrolled for the afternoon recreational swim will enjoy the swimming pool at Regis College’s state-of-the-art athletic complex in nearby Weston. It’s an eight-minute drive from Claypit Hill School.

Wednesday Field Trips, School Age. Field trips are planned for different age groups and trips are scheduled to places such as Tomb (Egyptian adventure), Pawtucket Red Sox, Lobster Tales in Plymouth for a Pirate Cruise, Roger Williams Zoo (RI), Trombetta’s mini-golf and ice cream (Kindergarten), and Patriot Hall (WPKN and Incredible Adventures only). More trips will be announced as soon as they are finalized.

New Elective. The Pegasus Times will be coming off the presses, so to speak, as a new elective in Journalism debuts. School age children’s daily choices will also include dance, culinary arts, music, computers, games, and arts and crafts.

Specialty Area Changes. The Incredible Adventures specialty area for Grades 3-6 is expanding and will be offered both sessions. Active outdoor adventures are in the works. Plans include a Session 2 trip to Patriot Hall at Gillette Stadium on July 27th. Incredible Adventures participants will demonstrate the interactive football exhibits while WPKN (TV Production) videographers document their experience in a segment to be called “On Location with Incredible Adventures!”

Themes and Special Fridays. Themes this summer will be: Multicultural, Olympics, Hollywood, Animals, Winter Wonderland, and Pegasus Paradise. On Fridays, there will be Animal Adventures, a Snow Day, Luau, Trip Around the World, and Olympic Games. On the “Snow Day” three tons of ice will be delivered for a day of sledding, “ice fishing,” and other cold weather activities.

New Afternoon Options. Also new this summer are two afternoon options: “Sports, Games and Physical Fitness,” and “Art in the Afternoon.” These programs are from 1 pm to 3 pm.

Parents Welcome! Parents are invited to spend time at Pegasus on the last day of each session. They can enjoy the play and slide show and join Pegasus for lunch in the cafeteria.

Professional, Caring Staff. Finally, it appears it’s not just the children who are having fun. As of now, nine out of ten of the Pegasus staff from last year say they plan to return in 2010. Likewise, enrollment patterns show sign-ups are on par with last year’s participation, which had a record enrollment of 240 students.

The Wayland Firefighters Association is accepting applications for our third Wayland Citizens Firefighting Academy. Students will have the opportunity to see what it’s really like to be a firefighter.

Training will be presented from a new recruit’s perspective. Participation will include "hands-on" activities such as extinguishing live fires with extinguishers or hose lines and extricating trapped victims from a vehicle using the "Jaws of Life."

The Wayland Citizens Firefighting Academy will provide a unique inside look at a firefighter’s career as well as offer important fire education and prevention lessons.

Classes will start on April 1 and will be held on every Tuesday and Thursday night through April 20. This program is geared towards adults; however high school students under age 17 may enroll if accompanied by an adult. There is no fee for this program. While Wayland residents get preference, this program is open to all interested.

To get your application or receive additional information, contact the Wayland Firefighters Association by e-mail or leave a voice message at 508-358-6922 including your name and contact number or e-mail.

But as with any iconic genre, change inevitably came to the classic British mystery. By reading selected mysteries from different eras, and even from different countries, the group will follow the evolution of the genre into a form that would be scarcely recognizable by its original practitioners! For more information and to register for this group, go to our event calendar at waylandlibrary.org.

As we commence our annual spring hydrant flushing program on Sunday, March 21st, the Wayland Water Division will at the same time begin introducing water from our newly constructed Water Filtration Facility into the distribution system. The hydrant flushing program takes approximately 5-6 weeks to complete. Work begins at 10:00 p.m. and ends by 5:00 a.m., Sunday night through Friday dawn.

Customers may experience discolored water for a period of time during the flushing process. The Water Division urges customers to avoid using the water during the hours of hydrant flushing to avoid drawing unsightly water into their homes. Red water, named after the red or black rust specks, sometimes occur when there is an increase or change in water flow, largely caused by water main breaks, fire hydrant flushing, and flow direction changes. These occurrences knock off small particles of rust and stir up sediments in the pipes. It is a temporary condition that usually clears up in a couple of hours. If possible, you should refrain from using water for laundry, dishes, cooking and drinking until the condition clears up. Although the increased iron levels that cause the discolored water do not pose direct health risks, they may pose significant aesthetic issues, such as unsightly water, staining to porcelain, laundry, fixtures, and a metallic taste to the water.

The Water Division will take all steps necessary to minimize the effects of the flushing program and the introduction of filtered water into the system. We have available free of charge to customers experiencing problems a product that will help remove stains. Please contact the DPW office at 508-358-3672 if you have any questions about the startup of the water filtration facility, the hydrant flushing program, or changes in water quality. You may also visit our website for additional information at www.wayland.ma.us/dpw.

Very little is known about slaves in Massachusetts before 1700, due to poor record keeping, a lack of wills, and few newspapers to advertise slave sales or announce rewards for capturing runaways. Many of Sudbury’s settlers, along with the rest of New England’s colonists, were simply too busy clearing fields and raising livestock, dividing land, and preparing for Indian attacks to have the leisure time to write letters or journals. Thus far, only one record has been found of individual slaves or slave owners living in Sudbury before 1700. But that does not mean there were no slaves here. Slaves may have been part of Sudbury households as early as 1653, as can be inferred from town meeting records regarding the division of a new land grant. Most town freemen wanted the land to be divided equally, but a small number had a different suggestion: "The lands shall be divided by the inhabitants according to their several estates and family and counting the family to be the husband, wife, children and such servants as men have that they have either bought or brought up..." Why would this method of land division be proposed if no one in the town had an indentured servant or slave they had paid for?

Don Ouellette, director of Wayland’s Department of Public Works, persuasively urged the Board of Selectmen on Monday to support the installation of a fixed network system for water meter readings later this year. The measure will be up for a vote at Town Meeting in May. Water meters, Ouellette said, which were last installed in Wayland in 1996 and 1997, have a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. Regardless of whether the town decides to remain with its present drive-by system, or adopt newer technology, the meters will have to be replaced in the near future. In order to go to the new system, Ouellette continued, the town will need to install new boxes over the existing ones. He estimated the cost to make this replacement this summer at $621,000 and would enable readings 3-4 times/day. Savings would result from quick identification of aberrations in usage patterns, virtually eliminating undetected leaks (and resulting write-offs), and reducing personnel time dealing with complaints over excessive bills. It would also help identify meter tampering and water ban violations.

The Weston League of Women Voters sponsored an in-depth program on the topic of Lyme disease on March 2. A concerned audience of about 50 people heard three professionals with very different viewpoints about the tick-born disease and its affect on residents of all ages. Many questions revealed the high level of alert in the community and a growing consciousness of the problems associated with undiagnosed and untreated Lyme. Conceived by Dr. Barbara Fullerton of Weston, the evening was organized around the personal stories of Constance Bean, Wayland author of the book "Beating Lyme," Dr. Corinne Ertel, a Weston pediatric physician, and Kurt Upham, owner of a landscaping company called Oh Deer.

Next Friday, March 19 at 7pm, the story of the struggle behind women’s suffrage in the U.S. will be brought vividly to life by a screening of "Iron-Jawed Angels," starring Hilary Swank as Alice Paul, Frances O’Connor as Lucy Burns, and Anjelica Huston as Carrie Chapman Catt. The screening will take place in the High School’s Little Theater and is being co-sponsored by the Wayland League of Women Voters and the Wayland Historical Society. Meanwhile, on Sunday, March 14, the Historical Society will present Deputy Chief Vinnie Smith of the Wayland Fire Department, who will talk about the department’s history. Firefighting in Wayland really began as a private enterprise in the late 19th century, when the owners of shoe factories in Cochituate and their insurance carriers shared a common interest in protecting their physical plants. In the early days, the men themselves hauled their equipment to a fire; horses came on the scene in 1884. But the pivotal moment in the transformation of the Wayland Fire Department from a part-time, volunteer organization came with the devastating Mansion Inn fire in 1956. This beautiful Victorian structure overlooking Dudley Pond was originally built by a wealthy family as a wedding present for a young bride.
