Call for Nominations for Lydia Maria Childs Award

The Wayland Public Ceremonies Committee invites citizens to nominate candidates for the 2010 Lydia Maria Childs Award for Outstanding Public Service. Submissions should be sent to Richard P. Turner, PCC chairman, by email to <rickypt@verizon.net> or via USPS to his home at 7 Nob Hill Road, Wayland. Each submittal, identified as “LMC Award Nominee”, needs to include a statement why this person deserves consideration. The submitter must also identify her/himself with an email address and phone number so that receipt can be acknowledged and allow follow-up as needed. The deadline for submissions to be considered this year is March 31.

Judging of nominees and selection of the honoree will be based on how well the person/group’s efforts/achievements are reflected in the following statements:
  • Not generally recognized (an unsung hero)
  • Makes extraordinary efforts
  • Gets truly significant results
  • Makes Wayland (and beyond) a better place
  • Leads to better self-governing
  • Contributes to the betterment of others
  • Promotes wide-based support by encouraging diversity of thoughts
  • Builds leadership/helps educate on controversial matters
Lydia Maria Child was a mid eighteenth century Wayland resident who advocated human rights, equality and justice for all as expressed in America’s founding documents. She was a widely published author, a popular speaker and an outspoken abolitionist who demonstrated leadership on controversial matters.

The PCC also welcomes suggestions for the Grand Marshal of the Memorial Day parade and for Keynote Speaker at the Lakeview Cemetery ceremony.
