Advisory from Town regarding Water

March 20, 2010

Dear Kim,

You may be seeing brown water earlier than expected because of some changes to the planned schedule of the startup of the Wayland Water Treatment plant and changes to the hydrant flushing schedule.

The DPW has posted this notice explaining the reason for the changes to the schedule.  The original schedule is posted here.

The advice contained in that notice for dealing with the discolored water is as follows:

The Water Division is urging customers to avoid using the water during the hours of hydrant flushing to avoid drawing unsightly water into their homes.

Red water, named after the red or black rust specks, sometimes occur when there is an increase or change in water flow, largely caused by water main breaks, fire hydrant flushing, and flow direction changes. These occurrences knock off small particles of rust and stir up sediments in the pipes. It is a temporary condition that usually clears up in a couple of hours. The Water Division will take all steps necessary to minimize the effects of the Treatment Plant start-up on our customers. If possible, you should refrain from using water for laundry, dishes, cooking and drinking until the condition clears up.

Although the increased iron levels that cause the discolored water do not pose direct health risks, they may pose significant aesthetic issues, such as unsightly water, staining to porcelain, laundry, fixtures, and a metallic taste to the water. The Water Division has a product available that will help remove the staining, free of charge to customers that are experiencing a problem. Please contact the DPW office at 508-358-3672 if you have any questions about the start-up or changes in water quality.

Please feel free to forward this email to friends and neighbors.   If you have suggestions or information to add to the website or future newsletter, please email us.
