Thursday-Saturday, May 6-22, Hedda Gabler, Vokes Theater

The Vokes Players of Wayland will be performing Andrew Upton’s adaptation of Henrik Ibsen master work, “Hedda Gabler,” to be stage directed by Doug Sanders, at Beatrice Herford’s Vokes Theatre from May 6 to 22.  Performances are Thursday to Saturday evenings at 8pm, with a 2pm matinee on Saturday, May 15 and 22.   Ibsen’s classic gets a breathtaking update with Andrew Upton’s adaptation, a recent worldwide success that starred his wife, Cate Blanchett.

Familiar “traditional” elements of the original play are still here – newlywed Hedda and her dry, academic husband have just returned from their honeymoon; Judge Brack and Aunt Julle are circling around the couple, pursuing their own ends; and Lovborg, the exciting modern intellectual, comes to town, followed by admiring Thea. But in this rewritten “Hedda Gabler,” the inexorable drama of this famous scenario is made newly fresh and immediate, crackling with energy and pulsing with contemporary rhythms. The resulting impact is both emotionally and intellectually jarring, revitalizing a problem play we thought we’d figured out long ago.

For tickets and information call 508-358-4034, or order online on the Vokes' Web site.  Ticket prices are $15 for Thursday evenings and Saturday matinees and $18 for Friday and Saturday evenings.  “Hedda Gabler” is the third production of their 2009-10 season, and their 293rd production to date.
