Friday, January 28, Musicians of the Old Post Road present Hidden Treasures from the German Baroque, First Parish, 8pm

Musicians of the Old Post Road digs deep into unusual repertoire to unearth Hidden Treasures from the German Baroque.  Described as the instrument of “endless pleasantness”, the chalumeau (a rarely heard ancestor of the clarinet) will be featured, along with the Baroque bassoon, traverso, violin, viola, cello, and harpsichord.  Works to be performed include trio sonatas and quartets by J. G. Janitsch, J. A. Hasse, Christoph Graupner, J. D. Heinichen, and others, delighting audiences with a plethora of colorful sonorities. During the concert the musicians will speak about their unusual period instruments and repertoire. Performances will take place on Friday, January 28, 8 p.m. at First Parish, 50 Cochituate Road in Wayland and on Saturday January 29, 3 p.m. at Old South Church, 645 Boylston Street in Boston. 

The performers will be Suzanne Stumpf, traverso, Sarah Darling, violin, Daniel Ryan, cello, Michael Bahmann, harpsichord, with guest artists Owen Watkins, chalumeau, and Marilyn Boenau, bassoon.
