Rec Commission, Board of Public Works Talk Fields at Selectmen’s Meeting

Wayland Patch 3/22/11: Rec Commission, Board of Public Works Talk Fields at Selectmen's Meeting. Wayland's Board of Selectmen welcomed both the Recreation Commission and the Board of Public Works to its meeting Monday night. The individual groups gathered in the Selectmen's Hearing Room at the Town Building in order to discuss the five-year capital plan for field and facility development, especially in light of the upcoming ballot question regarding a debt exclusion intended, in part, to fund the development of two athletic fields at Wayland Middle School. Discussions centered on the findings of a report from Gale Associates, Inc., a consulting firm that specializes in athletic facilities planning and design. The Gale Report took a look at the usage of Wayland’s outdoor sports facilities and assessed the needs of the town regarding those facilities. "We're way overusing [the current fields]," Recreation Commission Chair Bob Virzi said the report revealed. "… About three times usage over what they will tolerate." Wayland’s Department of Public Works is responsible for maintaining the fields and DPW Director Don Oullette said he and his team are very aware the fields are in bad shape, but there isn’t much they can do given the current usage schedule. Oullette added that the two fields proposed as part of this year's debt exclusion aren't "really enough," but they would at least allow Oullette to rest one field by moving activities completely off of it for a time. Recreation Department Director Nancy McShea pointed out that Wayland’s youth programs are expanding rapidly; therefore, it isn’t that the fields have been maintained incorrectly, but rather that overuse is leading to their decline. In addition to growing youth programming, expanding adult and senior programs are also vying for precious time on the limited fields.
