Volunteers needed to complete wildlife fencing, Saturday April 2

Students, teachers and community volunteers worked two long days this past weekend to install fencing behind the guardrails on Rte. 27 north near the Wayland-Sudbury line to prevent wildlife from entering the roadway and ending up as roadkill. The fencing lines both sides of the roadway, running north from River Road and the small bridge to the Water Row crossing.

Emily Norton, an Environmental Sciences teacher at Wayland High School (and sponsor for the Environmental Club), organized the "Wayland Community Stewardship Challenge" to protect wildlife in this corridor thru the  wetlands.

Norton arranged grants from the US Fish and Wildlife Service and from the Wayland Public Schools Foundation for the project. Wildlife experts were involved in designing and installing the fence.

There is still work to be done to finish the fencing. Norton is asking for volunteers this coming weekend (April 2) starting at 8 am to put in the last stretch of fencing. Please contact Ms. Norton at emily_norton@wayland.k12.ma.us.
