CPA funds key as town budgets shrink

Wayland Town Crier 10/11/11: CPA funds key as town budgets shrink. As cities and towns strip local budgets to the bare necessities, some people in MetroWest communities say local governments often forget projects that preserve their quality of life. Restoring historic buildings, conserving pristine land and building homes people can afford seem insignificant as schools, roads and municipal salaries suffer, many residents say. For the past 10 years, the Community Preservation Act has provided state funding for those projects. But what began as a 100 percent state match of locally raised money has now dwindled to an average of about 37 percent. Thanks to two recent pieces of pending legislation, however, MetroWest communities might soon be able to receive more money to build affordable housing, preserve historic buildings, create outdoor recreation facilities and preserve open spaces.
